You can buy new, good quality BURNERS for 30 bucks these days...a modern standalone music player should not be much more than that.

Explain it to him this way: "Don't worry about the details, I can get it fixed for you fast and in a way that will save the company MONEY."

The phrase I keep hearing come out of his door is 'I don't understand.'
To quote a friend... "What's not to understand? You go to a store, pick one out and buy it. Do you need me to draw you a fucking picture?"

Not really comparable. A stand alone player needs the electronics to not only read the data, but decode it, and needs speakers. A burner just needs a connection that tells it how to use the laser it has, and that's it.

Make it backwards-compatible, too. I've got a few 45s lying around I'd like to listen to. And this is all under warranty, right?
Sounds like you need the iZilla Media Monster - part of the "specials" page for ThinkGeek a few years ago on April 1st. I e-mailed them asking if it could write to LP-R and LP-RW media (since I already had read/write capability for CD and cassette, and read capability for vinyl), and whether they had an add-in receiver for their wireless extension cord (thing either plugged in, or took a ridiculous number of "D" batteries), or whether I'd have to duct tape the receiver for the standalone unit onto the iZilla. Got back a form letter about how it was a joke - I realized that, just having a bit of fun.

I press the power button. The unit turns on, connects, and works just fine. Simultaneously restoring functionality to the other three terminals that connect through this one. What a f*cking miracle.

DRM comes over and snaps 'Did you fix it yet? See all the people waiting?'

I politely turn and say 'Why yes, I did correct the issue. It seems that all you have to do to use it is to turn...it...on!' There were a couple snickers from the guests in line that just warmed my heart.
If I had a dime for each time that happened (but with me it's not a walk, it's a 45-60 minute drive).
