  • The printer is not the problem here.

So, one of our guests has reported multiple printer problems with our guest PC. All of the problems relate to him being unable to print his emails.

Problem 1: This was technically legitimate - it was out of paper.
Resolution: Put in paper from stack next to printer.

Here's the rest of the reports that I got (second hand, as he never called me direct.)

Problem 2: It was printing stuff but not what I wanted - fix it!
Resolution: Tested printer - works fine - prints documents and web pages.

Problem 3: It is still printing the wrong things! I expect it to be fixed!
Resolution: I was running a quick test page and asked Mr. <guest> to show me the problem he was having. Instead, Mr. <guest> said he had no time, got on the elevator with his wife, and left the inn for the rest of the day. Printer tested fine as before.

Problem 4: Printer is broken - fix it!
    Resolution: Printer tests fine.

Problems 6 - 8: Wash, rinse, repeat - still broken!
    Resolutions 6 - 8: Printer tests fine.

Finally, the innkeeper managed to get him to agree to meet with me and show me the problem.

The problem was quite simple - his webmail has a separate 'Print' button for the email itself. If you choose 'File' then 'Print', it will print everything else on the page (banner ads, etc.) except for your email. He argued that was nonsensical and that it only works that way with our printer and works the other way everywhere else. Finally, he accepted that I was correct and then insisted I watch while he printed all of his emails out. When he did it my way, it worked every time.

He's promised to take this up with Microsoft so that his <not Microsoft webmail> works properly in the future. I wished him luck.

I had a moment like that with my mom while setting up their system to dual boot windows 7.

At the start of it, I told her that this was primarily a trial setup to see if she likes it. if so and she wants the setup permanently, she's going to need to get a larger hard drive (which makes sense, 80GB total is kind of small for a Windows 7 Dual Boot in the long run)

Big mistake telling her that. You see, she hears something like that, and suddenly all issues are related to it.

So I tried doing the Win 7 install and got an error. Damn. Did a new burn, didn't even get that far. Lather, rinse repeat a couple more times. And every time my mom asked if it was the small HDD causing the problem. (before the files even get extracted? umm no. the HDD is not even being used, which I tell her 4 times throughout this)

Turns out the reason was the optical drive in her machine. For some reason, it did not like the Windows 7 disk. So I pull mine out, plug it into their machine (In a display that would probably get me shot by any "by the book" techs) and got it installed. After I got it installed and back to it's original state, guess what she asked. Go on, guess.

"Could the problem have been the small hard drive?"

"Why are you hitting your head against the wall?"
"Because it feels so good when I stop."
