  • Pity party, for one.

So, we had an old Dell dropped in. Student was unable to access her student folder from her room.

We found out that one of her startup items is blocking her from pulling the folder.

Guess who got stuck with the laptop?

Oh, and guess who's also dealing with a Koobface virus on another machine with also involves going through the startup entries one by one?

    Here's the process.

    Log in to the machine.
    Wait.
    Open IE.
    Wait.
    Wait.
    Wait.
    Log in to our NAC.
    Open My computer.
    Wait.
    Open Student share.
    Hope for the login box.
    Open MSConfig.
    Wait.
    Enable the next entry.
    Restart.
    Repeat.

Angel, it's faster if you do a binary search. Disable half the items. If it doesn't work, disable half of those, etc.

On the second computer, I got bored and did it in groups of three. Of course, it ended up being the one I was suspicious about anyways. :: shakes head ::

Yeah, the binary search is a good technique. Trying the suspicious one first is also a good heuristic.

And FWIW, you might want to ask old Mac-heads about Extensions troubleshooting - it's the same kind of thing.

              Oo. That's a good idea.

              I always just disabled everything.

One of the first things I learned when I was training as a computer tech... the computer doesn't care if you are nice, and the end user won't know any better...
