"I'm not blaming anyone for our outage today, but our DHCP issues started at the same time a certain MIS professor started teaching his students about DHCP."

    A certain HANDS ON professor.

    THANKS, PROF!

Well, if it helps, some routers on the market can be set up to only allow dhcp host responses from authorized ips. That helps keeping other dhcp servers from being able to mess up your network.

At my school they had the labs set up for teaching that stuff in a way that wold make it hard for any traffic for that lab to cause network problems. I think they considered it the same as the public WiFi, security wise.

This is the way we did things in my MCSE classes. Our instructor set up a mini-lan that did not extend beyond our computers.

Of course, we didn't get into this much detail, the lan was more for keeping us connected when taking quizzes (which were game-like, we buzzed in if we knew the answer...

I took a network protocol sniffer class (1 week) in Dallas.... they had the training room LAN on the same subnet as the rest of the office.
