  • The first of I fear many Windows 7 EWs....

Ever since Microsoft admitted Vista wasn't at good as they had hoped (corporate speak for "we know the product is crap"), I feared that one glaring admission was going to cause people to become EWs to try and get a free copy of 7.

Like this one. He actually wasn't sucky until he opened his mouth about Windows 7:

SC: Can I ask you a question on Windows 7?

    Me: Sure.

SC: I was forced to buy Windows Vista, which is crap. (Who "forced" him? He had the opportunity to downgrade to XP as his desktop PC was one of the first-gen Vista models.) I am deserving of a free upgrade to Windows 7.

Me: Being your computer is over 2 years old it does not qualify for the free upgrade program.

SC: Both Microsoft and [store] admitted Vista is crap, and again I was forced to buy Vista when I bought this computer. I believe I deserve a free upgrade to 7.

Me: Technically, you weren't forced to buy Vista. When Microsoft came out with Vista, they insisted that the major OEM's like Gateway pre-load Vista and not XP. They also insisted that retailers not downgrade computers on the shelf to XP. Purely a business call.

SC: So are saying I'm stuck with software Microsoft and [store] admitted was junk?

SLD's note: I never heard our store calling Vista crap. They would have gotten sued by Microsoft if they did.

Me: Not at all sir, when it comes out if you want it you can buy it.

SC: That's not very fair to me. I was forced to buy this computer with crap software.

Me: Have you installed the 2 service packs for Vista? Because those updates fixed many of the issues people had with Vista.

SC: That doesn't matter. I want an upgrade to Windows 7 for free as I was forced to buy crap software.

At this point I had it. He wasn't eligible to get the free upgrade, and I got tired of him constantly saying he was forced to buy Vista. I didn't tell him that he had a chance to downgrade to XP as that would have ticked off a fury of "why didn't you tell me that when I bought it!" tirades from him.

Me: Sir, I'm sorry you feel this way but from a business standpoint Microsoft is not going to give away free copies of its software just because people don't like the previous version. Like I said before, as your computer was bought long before the free upgrade program if you want 7, you can buy it.

SC: You know what, all you're being is a parrot and not actually helping me. I guess I have to take matters in my own hands.

Me: If you want to call Microsoft, you're more than welcome to.

    SC: Yeah okay bye.

    *click*

Yeah I know 7 is the great one that saves up all from the "horrors" of Vista (at least we hope), but if you have to buy it, you have to buy it.

Wow... this EW really expected you to just hand over a free copy of Windows 7 just because he doesn't like Vista? Despite that he readily has used Vista perfectly fine since he got the system too? Yeah.... someone might want to instead hand him over a nice ole bag of common sense. Because that's the only thing he deserves to get for free since he obviously lacks in it.

On that note up until earlier this year I had been using XP. My new system however has been Vista since I need the 64-bit version (6 gigs of RAM) along with the 64-bit version of XP doesn't seem to like the Zune software amongst other things from what I've heard. Haven't had any issues with Vista on my new system. I am looking forward to Windows 7 outside of them removing the classic start menu. Then again I'm getting Ultimate for free because I'm hosting an Windows 7 Launch Party.

I've been hearing some pretty promising stuff about Windows 7. But I like to wait after a year or two for a new OS when they get all the kinks and bugs out of it after all the hype. So that SC actually expected you to give him a free Windows 7 upgrade because he didn't like Vista and was forced to buying it? Who put the gun to his head to buy it anyway? What a twit.

To be honest Windows 7 is pretty stable and usable out of the box. Reality is that its an improved version of Vista that isn't as demanding on system resources the way Vista has been. So you'll be pretty safe in running Windows 7.

I've been running Windows 7 since the beta - it's been solid. I'm really looking forward to installing the RTM copy on my desktop and notebook.

BTW, I just found out about this. For any college students, look at this. Especially check out the 'Buy' square on the site.

I've used vista and it's worked pretty well for me, but upgrades are always nice
just one question though, since we'retaking the old OS out and putting the new one in, will that wipe blank all of our files and stuff?

(Yeah, when it comes to computers I know only the basics of stuff like that. Only really use it for writing and internet.

Depends on how you install it.

Yeah, I got in on that deal as well. Gonna set my rig up for dual boot with XP (I have some stuff with no chance of working on 7 and no upgrades coming)

Its past the point of signing up for it but MS is running Windows 7 launch parties where hosts get a free copy of Windows 7 Ultimate. I'm looking forward to running my party in fact.

According to that site, it's open until Jan 3, 2010

I fully plan to pick up a couple copies at that price, if you can order more than one. At the very least, my main desktop will get upgraded.

The Windows 7 Launch Party isn't the same thing as the college discounted edition of Windows 7. The Launch Party is where you invite people over to show off Windows 7... and you get a free copy of Windows 7 Ultimate along with various party things as well.

I'm excited to host mine. I'm doing media center stuff that shows what one can do using Windows 7 (and a PC) as an home theater PC.

If you install it without reformatting your drives, and being careful with options (like, if it says 'save my data', you say 'yes'!), you should be fine.

However, with any major computer maintenance, you should back up your files and stuff first.

Everyone should be careful to backup their files anyway - hard drives are mechanical devices as well as electronic ones, and like all mechanical devices, they WILL wear out.

                            2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
                            3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
                            4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.
