    Depends on age and construction of drive - I've had some drives that say they will withstand 40G shock when not running, and that drops dramatically to 2-3G when running.

    Data may not be recoverable - I've opened drives to show the customer the deep track he put in the disk, and one time I've even been able to show that (early) drives were glass platters, and all that dust inside the drive was actually a very difficult jigsaw puzzle of their data :-)
