This guy called in and had issues with missing recordings that were scheduled to record on the DVR. When I had him check how much free space he had (it was 37% free space), he says that it should still work with 37% space. Then this moron wanted to cancel his contract with [Name of satellite provider] and wanted to speak with a manger. Dude, 37% free space is pretty small, just erase all your shit you don't want or watch any more, simple as that! DUMBASS!

Not doubting he was an ass, but I do have to ask: 37% of what total? I mean, 37% of one terabyte is 370 gigs, so lots of space. 37% of 1G is only 370M, so not so much.

My homebuilt system has about 700G dedicated, and was running happily at 93% full (leaving a mere 55G free). So, I have to ask: 37% of how much?

*nods* I like to know of what, as well. 37% as just a percentage is still pretty good.

I'm able to get close to full before having trouble.

It's 100 hours of DVR space. I forget how much in GB's or so in terms of HD space. The thing is it was a High Def DVR and HD programs take up more space than standard definition programs.

Right, so he had roughly 37 hours free space. Even with the Hi-def taking axtra space, that seems like there may be an issue there. Is your company one of the nice, reasonable ones where the customer could trade in the DVR? (assuming it belongs to the company, of course)

Just looked it up 100 hours SD =35 Hours HD=120GB so 37% would be maybe 12 hours...
Honestly.... the image of that in my head made me go "AWESOME!"..... and then I remembered I am terribly strange.-Red dazes

I assumed something different. Since people record, watch and delete programs often in different orders the HD can get badly fragmented. Even a badly fragmented drive should record a program at a time, but if this is a system that will record more than one show at a time (my friend's does three shows at one time) then the system will fail due to seek delays.

They don't do trades unless it's for receivers that can't get certain software updates or services installed.

Another thing too is usually if a show changes to a different time slot then the show won't record as it now falls outside of it's original recording parameters. You'd then have to go in and change the recording settings to the new time that it's on at. Least that's how it is with the Rogers PVR's last time I was using one. So perhaps his shows have changed to air at a different time and he's too stunned to realize he needs to change the recording time.

Comcast adjusts for that automatically and I think Tivo does too.

I would never remember to change recording times!

GEEK here.... I have 7500G* Dedicated... I win. In my defense I do a lot of high res video editing.
