  • Updating the printers, the wrong way.

Had a fun morning at work yesterday due to a new set of updates that're being put through the network for the new tax year. IT apparently had to update the systems with new annuity rates, tax codes, pension allowances and so on and all was going fine until someone accidentally "updated" the printer software too.
In essence it knocked every single printer in the building off the network at 9am and they then had to be reinstalled, manually by a guy in a laptop, at five minutes each. Two and a half hours later they'd reached my floor for the repairs.
I never realised quite how boring it was at work when you can't actually do any work.

I can tell you it really isn't fun for the tech either. Given an emergency call from the remote support (who was probably the 3rd or 4th person called), had to bust ass to get there almost getting speeding tickets due to the impatient managers, having to click a few things on the computer then wait while every manager in the building wants to know how long it's going to take...

You see, when techs give a ridiculous fee for someone asking how much for them to fix it on the spot, this is why. Well, that and they have no insurance for it so they have to pay for any expenses out of pocket.

I'd have had more sympathy for the man fixing them, but the rest of the IT dept decided to send the one who'd clicked the wrong update button in the first place to do all the repairing. Kind of a self-inflicted injury in this case.

Next time a dialog box pops up and asks "Are you sure?" this tech may think more carefully before clicking the "YES" button in the future.
