A bit of a self sighting here: I just got a new computer and I'm setting it up to transfer everything etc.

Firstly removed the 'bloatware' including IE9.
Then found Chrome wasn't the current version and the updater wouldn't work.
Uninstalled the current Chrome... only then did I realise I therefore didn't have a browser installed to get the new version of the website.

Luckily the installer was already in my downloads folder in the machine!

I keep IE on my computer anyways just because of those few remaining cases where some dinosaur of a site won't work properly in FF or Chrome, and I have to sigh heavily, open up IE, and proceed.

That said, besides it being a little bit of a hog (not as much as FF, though) it's a huge improvement over all the previous incarnations of IE.

You can remove IE from a winmachine now? Back when I was using windows you couldn't because explorer also managed the folders etc. remove it and the computer wouldn't work.

i did however block it from going online at my firewall

It allowed me to remove it from the programs list... I however have a feeling it may still be lurking in there somewhere...

I've done that myself years ago Gizmo - think I resorted to mailing a Netscape incarnation of some sort to myself. Glad you had the installer on hand. And btw - try this: open Explorer, and type the full url of google into the address bar in it and hit enter....

ah.. if you remove it from the start programs list it may still be there.
if you used add/remove programs... to be honest i'm surprised it didn't put up a fit.

try what sms suggested if need be. if you can web browse from a folder than IE is still there

I try to make a point of having a disk and/or USB drive with the vital programs on it (mostly a browser, since once you're online you can download everything else) prior to setting up a new system if I don't have another working system handy.

Although, these days, you could probably use a smart phone to do nearly the same, only it'd be rather a bit more irritating to deal with.

Yeah, its still hiding in there >.< I actually did use the uninstall option too. If the worst came to the worst I did have another laptop and memory sticks to do transfers across!

it's not your fault. the computer can't function without it which is why it's still there.


you can however block it from going online at your firewall though

I don't think you can completely remove IE unless you are using an "N" version of windows. It's not as embedded as it used to be, but Microsoft leaves it there as a default option so you can get to the net and download your preferred option

Didn't MS get sued over the inability of removing IE without damaging the OS? Don't know if it was successful or not.

The end result of the anti-trust lawsuit was that Microsoft could not have sole exclusivity or preference of it's programs on it's OS. The window where you select your default programs for various functions (web browser, email, messaging, etc) and the ability to select any search engine in IE are examples of it.

so basically, they can't force you to use IE over say Chrome or Safari, but they don't have to give you the option to delete it either. if i am reading that correctly that is.
