    Okay.

I seated the FireWire card firmly in the tower.

I plugged the cord into the other port.

I plugged in the other camera (the JVC).

Windows eagerly searched for, found, and installed the drivers for that model. The little "what do you want to do?" window came up, and this time it didn't disappear in a millisecond. I chose the "always ask me" function.

Now, I can also plug in the Samsung. Thing is...

I still can't download video. Neither camera shows up as an external device. Turning the camera off and on again has no effect - as a matter of fact, it looks like all battery power is gone on both of them, which is a bit too much for coincidence.

    Thoughts?

If they use tapes, then you can't just pull "files" off them. Instead, you play the tape in the camera, and it is received over the Firewire cable in the video-editing software.

Yes, I know. The fact that the device doesn't show up as being connected does give me pause, though.

I bought two new batteries compatible with the JVC camcorder.

I put a tape in said camcorder.

Camcorder is sitting on the floor next to me, plugged into the FireWire port, and downloading video.

          SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!!
