I followed the instructions of ChatGPT in an attempt to get my webcam working. Now? I can't use my computer. The instructions were to disable the USB root hub. So I did. Wow! The keyboard and mouse don't work now! Who'da thought?

I'm done with taking AI instructions. Is there anything I can do to get the USB ports working again, or do I need to take it to the shop?

Are you able to reboot the computer with the power button? Hold it down for a few seconds (on most systems) to shut down. Wait ten seconds or so after it's done doing that, then power-on again. This may re-enable the usb hub. If it's an OLD computer, it might have a connector that allows input device types other than USB. If even one of the two (keys or mouse) works, you'll be able to navigate Windows to undo the change.

USB Root Hub is the drivers for the USB ports. That said, uninstalling them and then rebooting is considered one of the normal repair techniques, so a power cycle is probably the best way to encourage that if you can't control the keyboard or mouse any more - usually it's recommended to do them one a time to avoid this kind of situation but obviously the plagiarism machine didn't copy that bit of info down.

        Gawd, I FINALLY fixed it!!!!!!!!!

It only took two and a half days.

I had to buy a Ps2 keyboard and mouse (the computer has ports for them). I plugged them in, and YES! it worked! I futzed around with the Device Manager, and uninstalled the root hub ports. Then I restarted the computer.

Then I freaked out and started looking everywhere for drivers for said ports, since they didn't show up in Device Manager. And each driver I downloaded was blocked from being installed, due to potential security issues.

FINALLY, I did it! I right-clicked on Universal Serial Bus controllers in Device Manager. And that is what did it. I am now typing on my USB keyboard and using my USB mouse.

        And, FUCK ChatGPT!

You shouldn't have had to look for those drivers, they're part of Windows' basic install. That's probably why it was blocking all the others. Glad you got it working. Yes, please ignore the plagiarism bullshit machine, all it can ever do is regurgutate text that looks convincing, with no actual fact checking or authority behind it.
