I've been approached by the organizer of a local open mic who wants to expand his promotional reach. I suggested that a good web site and some forums might be a great way to create a community. Then he asked me if I could find out more about getting some forums going . I know the basic concepts, and I've seen way too many cheap and easy forums get spammed to death (I know CS has been hacked before also).
I'm going to suggest having them done in Linux (I want the job done right, dammit!) but barring anyone we know having the ability to do so, is there a simple solution if we haz monies? I know there's always vbulletin, but how is their security? should we be avoiding vbulletin? why am I out of cheese?
as best as I can guess we're going to have about 200 users, maybe more, and we can expand from there.
I'm finding all sorts of software packages, I'm just really not sure where to start and what's reliable
