  • Ran a hardware diagnostic test on my computer & problems were found

    I have a Compaq Presario SR1230NX which I bought in 2004.

I installed Fix It Utilities 10 & ran one of the diagnostic tests.... a hardware diagnostic test, & this problem was detected...

interrupt controller test failed possibly due to...
    • failing interrupt controller
    • failing real-time controller clock
    • unknown motherboard failure

How do I fix this problem?

Why are you running the diagnostic tests? What is not working properly?
There's no such thing as a stupid question... just stupid people.

Is the date and time going wrong, particularly when you turn it off? If so, that seems likely to cause such a test failure.

The underlying cause is usually the CMOS battery, which is easy to replace. Just get one of the correct type (usually CR2032, but check), remove *all* power from the machine, open it, unclip the old battery and put the new one in. When you turn it back on, the machine will probably complain that the BIOS settings are reset, but just let it reload the defaults and you'll be fine. Don't forget to set the clock.
