    I'm lucky in that I have an ISP who employs decently competent techs at their end of the phone. I'm actually willing to keep paying them a premium over other ISPs' service for this fact.

    One hallmark of a competent tech is that he can usually tell when the "dumb" end of the phone isn't actually dumb. As a result, I can say what I've already tried, and even suggest things for them to try (usually gleaned from previous experience) such as changing the sync speed down to 4M/1M Annex A (compared to the usual 24M/3M Annex M). They're even patient with me when I hunt around for a spare modem to rule out equipment failure at my end (on that occasion, it turned out to be a wire problem somewhere else in the building).

    Dealing with less competent techs is undoubtedly a finer art...
