Headers and footers

I'm actually going to self-publish my book. Now, I need the first few pages blank for cover art and title and all that. How do I get the headers and footers to appear later in the document, and not on the first few pages?

The answer to that depends on exactly what program you're using. So, which one is it? And on which operating system (since that can sometimes make difference)?
