My sister's laptop doesn't play DVDs

It's a Dell, it has a DVD drive, it runs Windows XP, but when a DVD movie is put in to the drive, it doesn't play. The Windows Media Player says the program doesn't have the codec.

So, what can I do, for free, so that she can watch movies?

I've always used VLC, since it can use so many different types of media.

I second using VLC, however another option is to download a codec pack, a good one to use is K-Lite Codec Pack, which can be downloaded from http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...Codec_Pack.htm

If you go to the product support page, there may also be firmware and software updates to the programs that were initially installed on the laptop. Check there and download the latest updates that apply to her machine.
