ya know, (without trying to start a political/morals argument and get this moved to Fratching) i hate it that people say that "oh, the conservatives will have a field day..." blah blah blah... I am conservative, but I really don't care about Dumbledore's being gay or not. I love the series, enough to have a sticker on my car and vanity plates that say "PRONGS", and a tattoo of Fawkes on my lower back. Sexual orientation is the last thing on my mind when I read these books, as well as in most of my daily life.

Rowling, finishing a brief "Open Book Tour" of the United States, her first tour here since 2000, also said that she regarded her Potter books as a "prolonged argument for tolerance" and urged her fans to "question authority.

I knew there was a reason I liked her.

To be fair, I don't think they meant ALL conservatives, but rather THE conservatives among the religious right that have been so anti-Potter over time. Just like not all religious people are against Potter, neither are all conservatives, and I think people that say "they're gonna have a field day with this" KNOW that, and are only referring to the rightwing religious wackos that DO have an issue with Potter.

Just saying, as I am neither a religious type, a conservative, anti-Potter, or a Potter fan. (Don't ask why I read this thread to begin with. I don't know.)

I picked up this morning's Edmonton Journal, and there was this story, it all of it's front-page glory. Then I thought two things:

1) Did anyone care or even think about about Dumbledore's sexual orientation?
2) Front page news? This? Are you kidding me?

Not that the idea is bad, but come on, telling kids it's ok to question those we've put in authority?

yes, I know, but I didn't mean what you specifically said- I guess I was referring to an article that I read about the story elsewhere, however it is true that many people equate the religious right with all conservatives.
