  • Wherin LHM provides free advertising

    http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/zackandmiri_blog.html

Larry H Miller has once again "banned" a movie... you'd think that he'd have learned after Latter Days and Brokeback Mountain that all refusing to show a movie (and making public announcements about why) only provides controversy (which is the best kind of free advertising).

The chain's spokesman Cal Gunderson expressed concerns about the film with The New York Post, citing the film's "graphic nudity and graphic sex" and that it was "too close to an NC-17."

The company's standards seem a little odd considering that the chain had no problems screening ultra-violent fare like "Saw V," which features beheadings and explicit self-mutilation. When asked why Megaplex Theaters did not object to the gory horror sequel, Gunderson had no comment.
Well, duh! Everyone knows that violence isn't the problem! It's the sex!

    SEX KILLS.

I think it's a funny kind of stupid that they actually started advertising (at least here in the US) the movie being called "Zack and Miri make a Porno", or something very similar. Damn my memory.

Anyhow, changing the title of a movie AFTER you start advertising it is bad form, in my opinion. They should have people during production thinking "Gee, do you think people will be upset at this title" and "Let's make sure the people we're advertising through will be okay with this and back us up". Hmph.

Looks like a funny movie in any case, and I wanted to see it -before- any "bad" publicity cropped up. I can imagine people going "Banned? Changed title? Ooh, I really want to see it now! It HAS to be good!"

don't think anyone is going "banned movie, must be good" but there are quite a few people like me who hadn't heard of it until the controversy started.

And actually some people will go out and watch movies just to see why they were banned from certain theatres (I'll admit, that was part of the reason I saw Brokeback Mountain... to find out what would be so horrible that LHM would ban it)

Mysty! Of course Sex Kills! Remember all those horror films from the 1980's??? It was the high school kids who were having sex who were killed ... not the virgins.

That is what it is called.

There was also a poster that was considered too risque in the US: http://jayandsilentbob.com/cazamipo.html

Actually, if you watch the amusingly horrible ones, half the ones having sex die, then all the virgins, and then the rest of the ones who have sex.

I know, but my point was, at least here in the US, they changed it to just "Zack and Miri" after a week or two of advertising.

So it was just the advertising that changed?

Ah, yes, but in those amusingly horrible ones, the virgins thought about having sex. So therefore, if they think about it, they might do it, and therefore they have to be taken out before that actually happens. And don't forget: All serial killer maniacs (either real or dead & returned) are mind readers.
