  • Amateur finds treasure trove in English field

I'm a history geek and I'm really excited about this. I can't wait to hear what changes this makes in how the Anglo-Saxons are viewed.

Anglo-Saxon stuff = awesome! I totally fell in love with the language after hearing Beowulf being sung.

Ever listened to the Illiad and the Odyssey? Epic poetry was made to be listened to ... the edition i have in the test swatch for the oddyssey ignore the overly long and verbose segment introduction.

Indeed it was. It's too bad that art has nearly died. Imagine sitting in a longhouse before a roaring fire on a cold winter evening and listening to the traveling bard weave his spell...

My SCA newslist had a similar article on the same story, as well as a link to pictures of The Staffordshire Hoard. These pieces are beautiful, really something to see.

Actually, yes I have! The school I went to had a small but very intense Classics track, and one of our traditions was to go over to our prof's house on Sunday before Labor Day, and read through part of the Iliad and all of the Odyssey. Yes, it did take all afternoon and evening...and night...and into the morning. It was a badge of honor to be able to say you'd stayed awake for the whole thing (I've done it twice.)

                Definitely better aloud than read.
