Khan (3 1/2 years old): "What's terrorism?"
It seems that after 3 1/2 years he's finally started paying attention to NPR, which I listen to all day.
I can deal with questions about genatalia, death, etc. But how do you explain terrorism to a toddler? Because I am not going to tell him he doesn't need to know. I have always encouraged questions of any type.
So I told him that terorrists are naughty people who do things to make other people feel scared. But he didn't need to feel scared of terrorists, because there are far more good guys in the world who will try to keep us safe. The naughty guys are always outnumbered and because of this they will never win.
What hard questions did your kids ask, and how did you answer them? I'm looking for ideas here myself...since I;m sure more are coming.
(my co-worker says that when her son was young, she was listening to an audio book of Lord of the Flies while she cooked and he played. Suddenly he asked her, "What happened to Piggy?" She had had no idea he'd been listening!)
