Also, fireheart, soft shell corn tortillas, not flour ones are the way to go!
That's what I've always gotten. I have trouble with the flour tortillas.

Old El Paso in Aussieland did a bunch of ads around the hard/soft taco debate. I think at one point it was to promote their kit which had both kinds in the one box.

I thought of Wood. OI, gutterminds, not the kind you are thinking of. But like hardwood and softwood trees. I don't know why...

But yeah, otterbox is great. I once accidentally dropped my phone into a sink full of soap and dishes and the phone was FINE! Weird for a day, but otherwise fine. Otterbox is amazing! Plus, lifetime guarantee and replacements!
So a bit of digging reveals that we don't have otterbox, but we DO have a bunch of knockoffs under different names. I'll go hunting tomorrow.

Based on the guesses here, I'm also guessing that hard case + bumper might be the way to go.

I've never had an Otterbox, but have had great success with Speck cases. My bedroom floor is concrete, and despite multiple drops the Speck case has kept my iPhones (3GS and 4S) from receiving a single nick or ding.

I might have a little more luck with that one I reckon.

I'll be hunting around tomorrow and will let you guys know what I get.

Out of my family (who all have iPhones), sis uses primarily hard cases (she changes hers every so often) although she has used a bumper in the past, my mum uses a soft case and my dad has a case that sounds like the OtterBox but feels more padded than toughened.

I'm just a klutz really. I do have a folio case for my iPad and I have dropped it so many times (including glass-first) and luckily it's managed to survive so far.

Either way, I'm definitely adding a pouch to the list regardless of which case I DO get, just for some added protection. It might help me also with some self-control in taking my phone out and using it (I am one of those people who is ALWAYS fiddling with their phone or similar)

I've switched from otter box to lifeproof. Seriously. It's waterproof. Not resistant. Like. I'm sending this from the shower with my lifeproofed iPad waterproof. I've taken underwater pictures with my iPhone. And it also protects as good as any soft case from falls.

The only VERY minor annoyance is the headphone plug. You have to unscrew it and screw in a little dongle thingy (about 5" long) but it doesn't bug me at all and I've found headphones that work around it.

Also lifeproof offers accessories like a connection extender that will let you dock your phone with the case on. Plus a life jacket. Who doesn't want a life jacket for their phone?!

No but seriously. Used it on my iPhone 4. Now have it on my 5. Love love love it.

Ok life proof we DO have in Aussieland, but I'm not sure if they still have them for the iPhone 4 (which is the model I'm getting) given that most stores are switching over to the 5.

In some online venues, yes. Shipping to Australia is very expensive and some retailers won't do international shipping.

If she is looking in stores for her next case it very well could be a lost item. Like in some places around here I wouldn't be able to find a case for my old iPhone 3G unless I wanted to go online and pay for shipping.

I got lucky. There's an outlet mall near the airport here and they are still selling cases. Turns out that EB games is still selling some older cases. There are a number of stalls that have popped up everywhere that sell cases going right back to 3G iPhones.

So that'll be my stop. I'm also going for soft, I kinda like the feel.

There were these really cute ones that resembled animals, but they didn't have penguins or one for iPhone 4 (it was for iPod touch) so I might have to look elsewhere

So true. Even the mom/pop variety and convenience stores that carry phone accessories aren't carrying the 3GS cases now. Everything's for the 4/4s and 5.

I even looked at a local flea market - they only had one bumper case in stock and it was a fuuugly blue.

Yet I can go on Amazon and find a metric ton of pretty cases for my 3GS (have one en route to replace one that came in with a bad crack in it 2 weeks ago.)

And there's a ton of stuff still out there for the 4. It's just easier to find online than out and about town.

There are two kinds of phone cases.

                            Otter Boxes, and everything else.

I don't suggest anything from the second category.

I'm still stickin by life proof. I've had the otter box and griffin cases. I find they stuck in my pocket .etc. and eventually the charger worked poorly cause the case cover pushed it on a weird angle.

Lifeproof has about a 1/4" if plastic that guides the plug in straight (actually fixed my iPads charging issue) and it protects against dust too. And it is only a little bigger than the actual phone.

The way to get to the headphone jack and camera always bugged me on other cases (pulling little rubber tabs). On this case the charging plug bit is hinged. Open it up and it's outa the way. Headphones. Unscrew a small plug and screw in a little extension (with holder for the plug. Also maintained water proof properties).

I've had 2 iPhone 4s die on me. One in an otter box. One in a griffin. So far in the life proof cases no issues at all (and I've dropped my iPhone 5 a lot)

Oh and life proof adds a camera cover bit that makes it anti glare

Ok, I'll definitely consider life proof in the near future, for now though, I sampled both the hard and soft cases. There are definitely benefits to both, however I found I had a problem with me fiddling with the soft case. With the hard case, I'm not fiddling with it so much.
