  • Wonderful News! :D

    [background]

So my mom's been dealing with kidney problems since I was 13. When I was 20 I donated one of mine to her. She only got 5 years out of it though (she caught a virus that attacked the kidney and basically killed it).
She's been on dialysis for the past 3 years and waiting for another kidney to become available.

    [/end background]

Now the wonderful news! One's available!

She got the call this afternoon telling her to be in Halifax by 10am tomorrow so they can do the surgery.

Right now she's calling everyone to tell them the wonderful news and then she's gonna pack her bags and head out.

Part of me still can't believe this. Mom's been waiting so long for another kidney and now she's finally getting one! This is as awesome as winning the lottery.

That is good news! I'm not sure that it is a brain burp though (unless posting it in brain burps was the brain burp, then .. Good one)

Yeah, the posting part was definitely a Brain Burp.

I didn't realise what part of the board I was in until after I posted the thread. I thought I was in Off Topic.

Too excited to pay proper attention, I guess.

          Thanks for moving it Ree.

At least the thread was somewhat relevant to the Brain Burps section in that I had a burp of my own by accidentally posting there.

And thanks for the well wishes guys. I know everything will go perfectly.

Oh I just feel like I could burst I'm so happy for my mom.

            Update time!

The surgery was a complete success; the new kidney took and is working like a charm. Yay! ^_^

Mom got the catheter out today and peed for the first time in years. She was so happy she cried.

She'll be in the hospital for the next few weeks so that they can monitor her dosage of anti-rejection drugs and adjust as necessary, but she's doing great. She's up and walking around, and like I said, peeing again.

She told me that the first time she needs to use the washroom after getting out of the hospital, she doesn't care where she is or what she's doing, she's gonna stand up and shout "I have to pee!"

                  That is freakin' awesome!

And this is a subject near and dear to me, as kidney disease killed my father. So, HELL YEAH!

Congrats to your Mom, Miss Maple Leaf!

A friend of mine finally got her kidney transplant in June, after being on the waitlist for two plus years (and Dialysis).

She was pretty much set to go Summer of last year, with a Live Donor arranged, and possible back-up Donor should the first one not pan out.

She ended up with a couple setbacks last Summer; Pneumonia, after getting over that, a transplant related heart surgery (pig valve installed), then had various issues related to that, bouncing back and forth between the Hospital and Aftercare a few times.

Then, the Live Donor Backed out, and she lost touch with the back-up.

Anyway, as I said, she finally got her transplant in June, and is currently doing fine, other than a recent issue that seems to have been taken care of.

That is amazing news! I am so happy for your mother! ^_^ I'll keep her in my prayers, though I'm positive recovery will go smoothly.

Also happy that the surgery was earlier this week and you didn't have to travel this weekend. I would hate to be on the 102 during Tropical Storm Gabrielle. The whole province is having flash floods. Please tell me you aren't travelling in this?!

Thanks again for your well-wishes guys. Both my mom and I appreciate them very much!

And I've got some more good news: Mom was released from the hospital yesterday. She still has to stay down in Halifax for the next two weeks while they monitor her and make any necessary adjustments to her medication, but at least she's out of the QEII (Queen Elizabeth II hospital) itself now!
She'll be staying in the lodge they have for patients and their families while she's down there. She's hoping that the doctors will let her come home a little early though. Everything's going great and she's doing really well so I'm hoping they will let her leave early.

Jester, I'm sorry to hear about your father.

Justa, I'm glad your friend is doing well now. Talk about some major setbacks!

And hina, don't worry. I'm not travelling anywhere right now. I'm here at home, safe and sound.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to go with her anyway though. I currently have a nurse coming every day to change the dressing on a wound I have from the surgery I needed back in May (damn thing still hasn't fully healed yet ) and they require 5 days notice to transfer patients from one area to another.
Since my mom had less than 24 hours notice to get down to the hospital there wasn't enough time for me to give proper notice to them.

My brother went with her though so that she wouldn't be alone. He just got back a couple of days ago. And I've been talking to her every day since the surgery.
She's also had a few visitors who were able to make the trip down, plus a friend who lives in Halifax, so at least she's not without company.

Sorry, couldn't resist. It's my nature to try to bring levity to an otherwise grim situation. Ironically, and amusingly, I get my sense of humor from my father....he would have appreciated the joke above, I think. And, to be fair, Dad died in 1981, so while you never truly get over it, I have had 32 years to deal with it.

My mom mentioned something to me last night when I was talking to her on the phone that I thought was pretty funny.

A guy she knows from dialysis had gone to Halifax a week before her for a transplant himself, and the nurses moved mom into his old chair, joking that it was the lucky chair (the one who had the chair before him got called for a transplant last December).
Sure enough, after only a week in the chair mom got her own call for a transplant.

Mom said that everyone at dialysis is gonna be fighting over that chair now.

Well, since I wasn't born until 1985, I don't think you can pin any blame on me. Last time I checked, I haven't mastered time travel yet.
