  • What do you think about "fashion"?

I recently saw an article about fashion that's probably best left for Fratching, but it got me to thinking.

How "important" is fashion to you? I don't know if it's because I'm a "small town Texas guy", or what, but for the longest time I've basically been a "jeans and t-shirt" kind of guy. I don't care for what's "in fashion" much at all.

Sure, I'll wear "fancy" clothes from time to time. But I don't generally look for "fashion" names. I go for what is within my price range, and what looks and feels good to me.

I usually wear Wrangler jeans, or at the office I wear whatever I usually pick up at "big box" stores. I'm looking to buy a pair of Roper boots, too. I do kinda like "western-style" fashion, but still, I wear what I like.

Heck, my suit I have hanging in my closet is from JC Penney. My sneakers I'm wearing right now are Sketchers, because they fit well and have memory foam in them.

Bottom line is, I buy stuff and wear stuff that looks good to me. The fact that something is "Tommy Hilfiger" or "Aeropostale" or "Abercrombie" doesn't really matter to me -- at all.

    What about you?

Whatever you do, don't wear soccer shorts with cowboy boots.

I don't care about fashion in the slightest. I buy most of my clothes from the thrift shop. I buy clothing that is comfortable, looks good on me and that I like. I have to wear business casual for work, but if I'm off, in the summer I wear jeans and tank tops and in the winter I wear jeans and sweaters. I don't care what is "in".

Jeans and t-shirts here, usually with sneakers or Airwalks. I dress up once in a great while but I never really pay attention to what is in fashion this season, unless I think it's particularly cute.

My stock answer to fashion queries is: I'm straight, I don't do fashion.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

            Quoted for truth.

First off, function over fashion. I usually don't buy designer/brand name clothes as I don't like paying their overinflated prices. I also tend to shun items that broadcast a brand name. I am buying this. You are not paying me to be a walking billboard.

            That being said...
Five year ago I got new frames for my glasses. This was a private practice (not a chain) and they did not have a very large selection of frames. I was shown a pair of Ray Bans. They have a really neat carbon fiber temple. However, they have the Ray Ban logo on the temple in raised lettering. I can't remove the logo as it is also the "nut" for attaching the temple pieces to the hinge. the logo also had a tendency to catch my hair (when I wore my hair longer). And of course, they are expensive. Well, between the insurance and the discount they gave me, it wasn't a bad price and it was the best choice the shop had. I was not very happy.

But the think that pisses me off the most...
Five years later, I am on my third set of lenses and the frames are in perfect shape.
I guess I got my moneys worth.

I won't say "Not at all" but it's damn close to it. I wear largely what's comfortable and looks reasonably good on me. I've bought a lot of my clothes at thrift shops, and buy the bulk of it nowadays at Northern Reflections because I have short legs and they actually make slacks that I can wear right off the rack!

"Fashion" only interests me insofar as I try not to look as if I think it's still the 1970s or something.

A while ago I was looking at some product and said "Oh, Jam Berry ... you mean, like the nails."

And three of my coworkers looked at me like "How do YOU know that?!"

Exactly. If they want me to advertise their shit, they can pay me whatever the going rate is for a PR person in their firm.

I definitely don't go for what people try to tell me is fashionable. My taste usually runs towards stuff I can't find brand new on the rack anyways, so I tend to scour thrift stores or make my own pieces. I can alter things to fit or repurpose things to suit what I want. My general look is goth/goth-inspired, and I don't mean stuff you can get at Hot Topic or Torrid either :P It's a good thing I know how to sew and draft my own patterns!

Fashion for me is optional. I can't say I don't care at all, but I don't care too much. We're so relaxed in this area. Jeans and some kind of coat with a hood, tennis shoes or boots or whatever. If I want to make more of an effort, I'll make pick a nicer coat, and/or match a scarf with the coat. Or nicer shoes. I tend to buy coats and shoes. I hope it snows this year I have new snow boots!

Aside from not wearing tank tops (I'm more of a T-shirt girl), you could be me.

                      Amen!

I think I decided fashion was stupid along about the disco era. Now I do tee shirts and jeans, or something deliberately funky that I've made myself.

Most fashion is styled for the young and thin, and as I'm neither, most trendy things aren't for me. I've looked at things and thought "not on these hips" or "not at my age."

I also firmly believe that if you are old enough to have worn a thing the first time it was "in style", you are too old to wear it when it comes back around. ;P

That said, I do wear some newer stuff if it's comfortable and fits well. And I love Skechers!!

                          I couldn't tell you what's in fashion. I dress like it's 75-95 years ago.

And some things look terrible even on the young and thin! I think that's what I don't like about fashion. The pressure to wear something because it's popular, not because a person likes it and feels good in it.

I do have some dresses, and I really like them. They're styled like this, and I wear a petticoat with them. I just picked them because I thought they were pretty, and it's been a long time since I saw a dress that I was drawn to.
