    Is this normal?

I was travelling last week, and as we were coming in for landing I got a MASSIVE pain in the head. It was like every side of my brain was being squeezed, like my entire head was in a vice. Man oh man that HURT!!! I thought I was going to pass out.

I had somewhat blocked sinuses at the time, having had a hayfever attack on the plane.

I've flown a few times before, and suffer hayfever constantly, but I've never had that. Is it something to worry about or does this just happen with blocked sinuses sometimes?

The massive massive pain lasted maybe 15 seconds or so then it was down to just plain "ouch that freaking hurts" for a few minutes and then shadow pain for an hour or so.

Sounds like your brain swelled up. Dunno what it could be, really.

Was it towards the front of your head? It was probably the pressure change combined with stuffy sinuses. Since it came on during landing and went away quickly as the pressure changed, it doesn't sound like it's anything to worry about.

That said, I am not a doctor. If you are worried or it happens again when you're not on a plane, you should see one.

I have had stuffed sinuses/been congested during air travel, and while such a thing is not common, it is not unheard of, and I have experienced it myself.

It sucks, sure. But as far as I know, it is normal for the factors involved.

It wasn't just front, it was everywhere. Pressing on the spinal hole at the back seemed to help a very little. Basically I just put my arms over my head, my head on my knees, and whimpered a lot.

Sounds from Jester's post like it's exactly what I thought - not too unusual given the circumstances. Right. Never - ever - EVER - forget the hayfever meds while flying again.

I've only flown twice (well, 4 times...I had to get home, after all) and last time was in the summer of 2001. I took Sudafed just to be safe (I have ear issues so I didn't want to take chances), and brought gum. I still got dizzy when we landed in Key West and we got through the airport and to the hotel and had stashed our bags before my ears finally cleared. Not fun. But I'll take that over pain.

I was about to say "Oh, I've had that happen", then I noticed that it was while you were flying. So no, I haven't had that happen, and I haven't flown enough to know if it's common or not. Sorry.

Always glad to jump in with a completely useless, wildly off topic comment

Though I wasn't as off topic as normal. I blame my cold. I am glad the pain didn't last with you though. When it happens to me when I'm walking around, it can stay like that for a couple hours.

                    Yikes, that would truly suck.

I have never had a migraine, and for a few seconds wondered if it was that. But it's not quite I think what they are described as.

No, that's not a migraine. Migraines are quite distinctive...

I've had that happen when traveling with a head cold. Once. Never again will I go near an airport without taking pseudoephedrine.
