  • Is it me or is there snobbery towards Second Life?

Because i've been on so many forums and from being ignored and the thread not being posted to,to people calling it a game.

Because one Law forum i won't mention here i mentioned people like Anshe Chung being billionares and the people were like, lol it's a game.

And that makes me so mad, because i own a shop in sl and those're the same people who think the idea of IP rights to be a joke.

    Anyway what say you.

I don't know much about Second Life. Is it not a game? I think MMORPGs like WOW and things like Animal Crossing (which I play) are games; what makes SL different?

I have no interest in games (?) like that though. My real life takes up enough of my time.

I treat it as a "game" in the thought that if I were to think of it as a job, I'd never come off of it. As it is, I've been in world all damned day.

I honestly see it as a viable way to make cash for people. Knowing my purchases actually give money to people for the creative endeavors? Well to me that's hella cool!

It is an MMO, so by extension it is a game. What separates it is that it's handled like real life is. Want to start a business, you need resources for it, which usually costs money. There's very few rules when it comes to playing it, so a lot of things happen, not all of them positive. Part of the freedom in the rules is that money made in game can become real money. So it's economy is much like, and often intertwined in freal finances. That's part of the reason why when someone who plays it gets so offended when it's called a game. To them, it's their life.

Personally, my premise is why woory about a second life when I don't have much of a first life?

It is a game. There isn't anything wrong with that though. It's also a game with potential real life benefits (making money from a store, such as you have). I've just never seen anything to make me consider that the label "game" might be inaccurate. You go in, make a character, act however you want, and do things which you may not be able to do in real life, all in a digital environment. Seems like a game to me As for being ignored or people not posting to the thread, if people aren't interested, why would they post? They're not compelled to post in every thread, after all.

As for the IP comment, that would be better suited for www.fratching.com

Because some residents whilst believing that SL is just a game may use illegal programs to duplicate creator's work without understanding the serious implications of their actions.

yes, there are people who are that low in SL just like IRL who will try to steal something, and a good friend of mine had their stuff stolen and the person who stole it won a DMCA case.

Last time, IP is for Fratching. Not here.

And there's people who steal IRL, it's not like thinking it's a game has any effect on whether someone will steal or not.

Second Life? IP? What? Wait, I missed something. What?

or is this one of those things I need to stay under my no-tv, barely-dial-up, doesn't-even-read-the-paper-outside-of-the-funnies rock?

IP = intellectual property. Copyright laws are part of it. Normally, safe enough. However, drawing the parallel of "dissing second life as a game = breaking IP laws" is a Fratching statement.

If you want to know about Second Life, I'd suggest a quick look at the Wikipedia page.

Is this what I think it is? I'm getting visions of .hack/sign here. Or is this like WoW and Guild Wars, just a game on the computer screen?

Because, frankly, I'm still trying to figure out how to hardwire a person like on Andromeda.

                          WoW without monsters.

                              My take on Second Life:

Virtual environment. Not a 'game' in any sort of classical sense. It's more a 'place' than a 'game'. If you go in expecting to find a game, to find tasks to do and goals to achieve, you'll be bored silly. It has no storyline, no plot, no monsters to beat up, no puzzles to solve.

What it IS, is a place and an environment, where every 'resident' (ie, you, me, everyone) has the tools to create the world. So rather than 'world of warcraft without the monsters', it's 'build your own world of warcraft - or anything else'.

Inside the environment, some people have constructed games - with storylines, plots, whatever. And yes, with monsters.

Also, there are art galleries. Sometimes with art that's not possible to do in real life. Musicians give shows. I know of a shakespearean theatre troupe in SL.

Many people love SL just as a place to create stuff. Many love it to see what others have created. For someone like me (disabled), it's a place I can be useful! I teach there, and make stuff there, and people like both what I teach and what I make.
And yes, I have a little shop there where I sell some of the stuff I make.

Some people use it as a collaborative platform. Some use it as a place to roleplay - or to, yes, make their own World of Warcraft. Many, many places use it as a teaching platform - on Genome Island, they have a bunch of teaching tools where you can explore different aspects of gene theory.

NASA uses it to run collaborative experiments. JPL has a presence next to NASA, for similar purposes.

... calling it 'World of Warcraft without the monsters' is really not doing it justice.
                              Seshat's self-help guide:
                              1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
                              2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
                              3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
                              4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.
