... calling it 'World of Warcraft without the monsters' is really not doing it justice.
No, but when the given options for comparison are "./hack" and "WoW" then you take WoW as the comparison point.

        My take on Second Life:

Virtual environment. Not a 'game' in any sort of classical sense. It's more a 'place' than a 'game'. If you go in expecting to find a game, to find tasks to do and goals to achieve, you'll be bored silly. It has no storyline, no plot, no monsters to beat up, no puzzles to solve.

What it IS, is a place and an environment, where every 'resident' (ie, you, me, everyone) has the tools to create the world. So rather than 'world of warcraft without the monsters', it's 'build your own world of warcraft - or anything else'.

Inside the environment, some people have constructed games - with storylines, plots, whatever. And yes, with monsters.

Also, there are art galleries. Sometimes with art that's not possible to do in real life. Musicians give shows. I know of a shakespearean theatre troupe in SL.

Many people love SL just as a place to create stuff. Many love it to see what others have created. For someone like me (disabled), it's a place I can be useful! I teach there, and make stuff there, and people like both what I teach and what I make.
And yes, I have a little shop there where I sell some of the stuff I make.

Some people use it as a collaborative platform. Some use it as a place to roleplay - or to, yes, make their own World of Warcraft. Many, many places use it as a teaching platform - on Genome Island, they have a bunch of teaching tools where you can explore different aspects of gene theory.

NASA uses it to run collaborative experiments. JPL has a presence next to NASA, for similar purposes.

... calling it 'World of Warcraft without the monsters' is really not doing it justice.
        well i'm one it too.

And I've been cosby cubed by a griefer group calling themselves the PN(i won't spell out the name here as it can be considered racist) at sandboxes and stuff.

I had a look but found it boring. Sorry, but I'll stick with my "unreal life" on Gaia. XD

I've played a lot of games and MMOs and the first couple of times I tried SL I hated it with a passion.

My best friend swore by the game so she showed me the ropes, let me see her character, took me past the newb barrier and what not. Now I am a DJ and a dancer at the Velvet Manor and I love the game. It isn't a game for people who like questing, but if you like the social aspects of games then it is definitely for you.

I also like that I can make real money when I play the game. Woohoo.

That's fine too. If we all liked the same things, there'd be one heck of a shortage of haggis.

I tiried out Second Life for a while. I didn't see what all the fuss was about. Wasn't my thing.
Ditto, and I don't consider it a game per se, I consider it more of a graphical chat room. The commerce going on in the process may just be electrons, but the revenue it generates can be quite real.

I do play MMORPGs, and even though they are games, I still consider them to be more like chat rooms with a nonphysical game going on, so instead of heading down to the local game store and playing with guys who have very little concept of bathing, I can log into my computer, hang out online with my friends chatting and shoot wargs and loot them =) I met my husband gaming in real life, and we game online now ... and I will chat with him in game even though he is sitting in either the next room or across this room =)
EVE Online: 99% of the time you sit around waiting for something to happen, but that 1% of action is what hooks people like crack, you don't get interviewed by the BBC for a WoW raid.

I downloaded it and tried it out when I was looking for an alternative to WoW. I spent about 3 hours just trying to figure out to customize my avatar, but once I had it the way I wanted...then what? I didn't have any money to spend, didn't know anyone, and any time I went somewhere with more than a few people I got propositioned every couple minutes. It was like Yahoo chat with eye candy, lol. I am definitely a "goal oriented" game player. I like quests and whatnot. SL just didn't have anything for me I guess.
