When I Was Your Age....

Mom let me watch R-Rated movies and would not have been considered a terrible parent.

When I was 7, we went to my uncle's house in Maryland for Christmas. One night, my brother (who was 9) and my cousins (who varied in age but were all older than my brother) watched Poltergeist. I was not allowed to watch.

Then I wound up with an ear infection, my aunt took me and my mom to the hospital to get it checked out, and they gave me a lollipop, and extras to take home to the other kids. I wasn't allowed to watch the movie with the other kids, I was in pain, and I had to share my lollipops!

(Though to be honest, if I had watched the movie I probably would have been sleeping with my parents....)

We had the official schoool map on the wall of the main hall which was a huge 6' long. It still had the Empire coloured in pink covering vast swathes of it and was labelled as the Chart of the territories and lands of our most Gracious Sovereign.

The Empire? Talk about living in the past!

Um, they still sell those. We have them at my store.

Really? I haven't seen them in YEARS.

Kids actually played outside

Okay, I've been seeing a lot of people say this. People of ALL ages. I got news for y'all. Kids still DO play outside. And parents have been yelling at kids to get outside more and stop staying inside so much since at LEAST the invention of radio, if not earlier. I am 39, and when I was a kid in the Seventies, we did play outside. AND, my mom DID yell at me when I would be watching tv rather than playing outside.

Just today, while doing my daily ride, I saw kids playing at the pool, on the seaweall, at the beach, at the skate park, etc., etc. I know Key West is not unique. (Well, not in this sense, anyways.) Kids DO play outside. Seriously. Stop this.

Finally we still had video arcades

We still do have video arcades. Hell, some of them even serve adult drinks, which make them the greatest things EVER! Well, after sports bars that have arcades, which are CLEARLY the greatest things ever!

They were way cool. Last time I spotted one was back in the late 80's.

But when hiphuggers, flare legs, cling polys, etc. started to 'come back' a few years ago I thought to myself - "Hey, we didn't know any better. You people HAVE PICTURES OF YOUR PARENTS looking like total dorks!!!"

That reminds me, a couple of years ago my family were visiting a family friend and out came the wedding album. My dad was the best man and it was in the 70s.

When we came to a photo of my dad in a green velvet suit with a lemon yellow shirt, he looked at our hosts and said "Before you say anything, remember, you chose it."

They were way cool. Last time I spotted one was back in the late 80's.

Oh yeah you can still find pinball machines at arcades. Almost all of them have at least one somewhere. I suck at them though.

I see pinball games in various places, including some arcades, though not usually in sports bars. It varies.

Ironically, I played pinball just the other night at one of the local pizza places. They have two machines there.....

*Reebok Pumps were it (My grandparents went to Florida and brought us all back pairs - although I got Air Jordans)
*The Pepsi SEX can was OUTRAGEOUS!!
*Stations went off the air
* I don't think we had infomercials
* Airlines served food (So it wasn't gourmet, but you didn't have to pay for it either), and you could get to meet the pilot
*TGIF - Dinosaurs rocked, and I LOVED Steve Urkel
