  • I do not want to be cross-eyed!

I read a lot, and I generally find it more comfortable to take my glasses off when I read. The other day, I was lying in bed reading, and accidentally rolled over onto my glasses. No biggie, it happens. They were a little squashed, but not too badly. Didn't think anything of it.

After a few days, I started to notice something: it feels like I'm going cross-eyed!! It very much feels like my eyes are trying to focus on two different areas, and last night I had double-vision for hours after taking off my glasses. It was gone when I woke up this morning, but holy crap!

I'm calling the eye center as soon as they're open to see how much it will cost to have someone adjust my glasses. Driving on the freeway when my eyes are focusing on two different areas? NOT FUN.

Wait......are you going cross eyed after NOT using your glasses or after using your damaged glasses?

Either way, that's almost certainly the result of serious eye strain (though you probably already know that). I actually had spasms in the muscles that control my eyes when I was in 2nd grade due to eye strain, which is ultimately how I found out I needed glasses (though that's a LONG story and I don't want to thread jack).

I get the double-vision after wearing the glasses; only after a few hours without glasses does my eyesight return to normal. i'm actually on my way to get them adjusted now.

        update

CRAP. The vision center guy at Walmart says my glasses are fine, and that there must be something wrong with the prescription. The prescription has been FINE for 5 years. When I told him that, he said I should get checked more often. Well, no shit, Sherlock--of course I'd get my vision checked more often if I could afford it.

Does anyone know if an eye can change that quickly? It's only happened in the last couple of days, which is why I assumed it was a problem from rolling onto the frames.

Whatever it is, I can barely see with the glasses on, but I can't do anything over the weekend. Just going to wear them as little as possible, I guess...

One would think that if you could see fine before, then the glasses get damaged, then you have problems - it's the glasses not your eyes (not saying your eyes might not of been damaged the same day... but would seem odd).

I'd be more likely to think the glasses are just a small fraction of the way bent, not enough to notice when inspecting them, but enough that they cause your eyes to focus differently. Or I should say "not enough to notice" when they think "I'll make money if I say this".

Normally I wouldn't assume that a store would try something like that.... but my family's had really bad experiences with eyeglass places. Long story short, mom's frames were damaged, took them in, was going to fix her frames (the nosepiece snapped), but gave her a temporary pair until then -- then ground down her lenses to fit into a temporary set (meaning, they wouldn't fit in her original frames!). They denied they ground them down (despite them being a quarter inch too small to fit in her old frames), but offered to "give" her a new frame for $499. (yeah, they intentionally destroyed her glasses so she'd have to pay them tons of money).

I've had my prescription change slightly and not so slighty over the course of a year.

I have to agree with JLR's first sentence. Go get a second opinion.

I don't THINK vision can change that drastically, that quickly, unless it's something like a retina detaching. (Where's JuniorMintz when we need her!!)

Best solution I can think of, if you can afford it, is to get the exact same frame style, and just pop the lenses in a new frame. Definitely need a second opinion, though, if someone's telling you that you suddenly need a new prescription.

Not unless you're a child and still developing your eyes anyways. Mine went to complete shit when I was in 1st grade. Happened in the course of about a month and wound up needing glasses that were so thick, Mom said I looked like a little owl.

i did the same thing, complete with little owl comments. >.>

Also, definitely go get a second opinion on adjusting your glasses. I've found that my frames being a teeny little bit off-kilter can cause severe eye-strain and double vision personally, so its probably that.

Well, right now, my right eye closes automatically when the light is anywhere near bright, and it's starting to feel like it's turning into a lazy eye. I can't get to an opthamologist till Wednesday at the earliest. I may just try to keep my left eye covered, since doing that seems to make the right one work a little better. I dunno...
