Whenever I see someone die that gets tons of coverage, I try to think of all the millions of people that die that have almost no one who cares, or just a handful of people -- and try to remember them (even though I don't know any of them) just because I feel they deserve it just as much.
I do the same thing... mainly because I'm pretty sure I'm one of those people who falls into the category of just a handful of people who care. So I make damned sure to care about those who no one else does.

Oh, and the next person on facebook who posts a status update about how much MJ will be missed is going to get shot... if it's their first time posting I'll be nice and do a graze, if it's their 20th such update, I'm going to go straight for the heart.

I'm tired of wanting to watch the news and hearing about him. A blurb or two is fine...but continuing to dedicate large segments of their program to MJ....eh.
Large segments? I wish. I turned on CNN a while ago to try to get some news. Did they devote a little bit of time to MJ? No. A large segment? No. Try the ENTIRE FUCKING HOUR that I had it on. I had it on as background while I did other stuff, hoping that, once they were done with this "lead" story, they would actually report some, oh, I dunno, OTHER news. Politics, war, serial killers, plane crashes, corruption, scandal, the economy, sports, weather....you know....news that is going on in the world outside of Los Angeles and the MJ memorial.

Look, I get that he was an icon. A legend even. And while I was not a fan of his music and certainly not of the man, I understand that due to his celebrity, they are going to cover this. But SOLELY this? Please, CNN, MSNBC, Fox....give me a fucking break. I saw more NEWS in a copy of the National Enquirer the other day!

Try LIVING near LA when this is going on. Traffic is insane, and there are helicopters all over downtown. The lunchroom is devoted to watching the memorial on TV. Good thing I planned on eating out today!

I also wish they'd just put Jacko in the ground or freeze him or whatever just so I don't have to hear about him anymore.

And also so that I don't have to see Al Sharpton blah blah blahing anymore like the attention whore he is.

Well i have to disagree with the rest of you because i am glad for all the news coverage.

I have learned a lot about MJ and what kind of person he was. I grew up listening to his music. I am glad to get a glimpse of what his life was like behind the entertaining. He was a true humantarian and lover of this world. He wanted to help the children and people of this world find peace and happiness. Something that he was denied growing up as a child by and abusive father.

I have to say that i did cry throughout the service. it was touching especially by his daughter. I can not imagine losing a parent. i thank god that my mom is still alive even if we have our differences.

As some have mentioned on other boards and tv you can always change the channel or turn it off if it bothers you.

How long do you figure it is before we get the first round of Michael Jackson sightings?
                    /tongue-in-cheek

I watched some of the highlights of the memorial service. That was a mistake. I've had a lump in my throat for half an hour now from Paris remembering her dad. I don't like that feeling.

Hm, I think I know what you are talking about, but that is FAR different from MJ's death. It deserved/needed the amount of coverage it received. Just my two cents.

Anyhow, I will admit to getting a little teary eyed when I checked into the memorial in time to see Paris Jackson's little speech. Geez. Poor little girl.

Oh yeah I forgot about that!

He'll probably be spotted in Kalamazoo with his old buddy Elvis eating Whoppers at the local Burger King.

Whether or not I like the coverage itself, the point that has been made here by the OP and others is that the channels that allegedly report the news are reporting only one farkin' story. No other news.

I have no problem with the coverage of the memorial per se, but when the memorial is not even going on and they are reporting every little minutiae, like where on the route the Jackson family is, etc., etc., etc., and not reporting any other news, that is a bit tedious. And that, my friend, was the whole point.

I had one customer call in today because her cable went out, and she was upset that I couldn't get it back on (she was in an outage), and she couldn't watch the memorial.

The only other customer to mention it? Wanted to get her video on demand working so that she didn't have to hear about Michael Jackson anymore. Her words? "I'm sorry he's dead, but I want to watch something else." We had most of our tvs on the memorial all day at work. (By the way, yes I got her VOD working again).

I'm kind of glad I came home after it was all over. That, and I mostly watch things on USA and TNT.

We have CNBC on all day at work. 9 hours a day of that shit is enough, trust me
As that station is bad enough with the constant repeating of news stories, this just pissed me off. How, exactly, is this *business* news? I mean, any other day, it's all about Madoff, AIG, GM, or whatever company is failing next. Throw in an Obama speech for good measure...and that's their broadcast day. Not so with MJ. His funeral got several hours coverage yesterday, I'm sure.

Oh, and changing the channels at work isn't an option. My boss wants CNBC on all day, so there's not much we can do about that
