We lived in Carson when I was little, and it was bad then. My parents couldn't wait to get out. At the time, my Dad would drive under this overpass everyday where some crazy guy would sit and shoot the cars below. I can only imagine how bad it is 32 years later!"Is it hot in here to you? It's very warm, isn't it?"--Nero, probably

Quoth JLRodgers View PostI wonder... is it even legal to cover that distance on foot (just thinking of different laws.... people on foot might be "illegal" to be on highways -- and highways might be all-but-required to safely get over some areas).
It is probably safer to be near civilization for most of the walk, but if the powers that be don't let ya walk the main roads....there I always the woods.
But yeah...would be a wise to check local laws
This thread is really making me want to do this, lol.

As a denizen of Long Beach, this comment left meQuoth AV8R View PostAs someone who currently resides in Long Beach California I have to ask the obvious question:
"Why in God's name would you WANT to walk here?"
Most people are trying to get OUT of California, not come here! Trust me, this is not a place you want to be right about now...

I'm just sick of Long Beach frankly. This city has really gone downhill in the last 2-3 years and it's not getting any better. 18% unemployment (and yes, that's the "real" number, not the manipulated statistic manipulated by the GAO that "doesn't count" certain people), too many people, too much traffic, nowhere to park, lots of abandoned, run-down buildings starting to dot the landscape everywhere, etc. It's not a fun time to be in CA right now - especially here. Yes, I can certainly think of other places that might be worse (Michigan comes to mind) but it's not what it was here a few years ago. Having a city (and state) government that is so utterly inept, clueless, devoid of focus and vision doesn't help either. Bunch of idiots who couldn't successfully run a shoe store without bankrupting it, much less a city government.
Or maybe I'm just becoming a crusty old curmudgeon who's sick to hell of urban living and dealing with people's B.S. on a daily basis, which is unavoidable in a setting like this. That's possible too.
At least we've got a couple of good bars and good weather most times - although it's starting to get a little too hot/roasty for my liking. I'm a 70-80 kind of person. When it starts pushing the 90s I get a little cranky.
Sorry for the rant/hijack. Maybe I should consider walking cross-country or something. Might be good for the soul. And it'd get me out of here for a while!

Well, I do have to admit that I'm up in North Long Beach, so don't have to deal with most of the crap that happens down by the beach itself.
But I can totally agree with you on the local/state goverments being pretty bankrupt (both morally and financially).
Do you read LBreport.com or NLBcentral.com? They're useful for keeping up on local events/situations.

To the person who asked about it being illegal, as long as you stay off the highway you should be fine. And you don't try to hitchhike, some places have laws against that. The Google Maps route that doesn't use highways... but the big problem of traveling from the east to the west is in the middle you have to go over the rockies. This route takes you directly over the bottom of the chain. (The roads in Kansas and Colorado are the way I take to get home.) There are 2 mountain passes on my way home. And while neither are the million dollar highway. La Veta Pass and Wolf Creek Pass are pretty bad and both have a pretty tiny shoulder.
