  • I just got run over by a ground hog

    Yep, you heard/read right.

I mosied on out the back door for my noon break smoke, when I hear rustling from the bushes around the side of the building. So I walk on over there and peek around the corner, to discover a bird fluttering away.

As I do do a 180 to head back toward the door....... WHUMP.... a big @ss ground hog smacks right into the front of my legs, almost knee height. My cigarette goes flying as I grab for the gas meter to keep from going flying myself. The ground hog bounces back about 2 ft, then shakes it off and runs back under the dumpster.

Man it's turning into Safari park out back. Last months there were the kamikaze starlings, who had built a nest on the phone pole by the back door.

The month before was Garfield the stray cat, that came streaking in anytime the back door was opened. Since my boss hates cat and actually gunned for him with his van a few times he saw Garfield in the parking lot, I ended up taking him to the ASPCA.

I'm starting to think it's me. I must have some strange animal magnetism going on.

Just be glad it wasn't a whistle pig as they are poisoness. So far this year I've dispatched 6 ground hogs and 2 whistle pigs. In the past while cutting hay I've seen whistle pigs chase the tractor trying to get at me, so I started carrying a carbine for protection.

      ?
      Woodchucks are not poisonous

Unless there is something else that doesnt show up on google for whistle pig?

My boss is a very big animal lover - remember we have a cat that lives in our office. There had been a feral cat hanging around for several weeks. She had tried to catch him and kept food (both dry and canned) and water out for him to keep him around. Apparently, while I was off work last week, she caught him in a live trap. She took him to a vet, who neutered him and treated all of his injuries. He is back in our warehouse now in a huge cage. She wants to keep an eye on him for a few more days before letting him loose. She hopes he will choose to live in the warehouse. Then, on the way home last night, she found a young dog and took him home with her. So today, he was also in a large crate in the warehous (when the other owner wasn't walking him around in the front yard of our building) Seems that the dog and the other owner have really bonded and I wouldn't be surprized to see him adopt the dog. But it is kind of like working in a zoo at times.

AWW I love reptiles. Thinking of a nice big gator as roadkill just tears my hearts a lil.................

My co-worker was telling me about the rummage sale her family recently held.

One of the browsers was a real hillbilly, speaking in a thick southern accent. He got to talking to one of her relatives and the conversation turned to dead animals like raccoons, rabbits and squirrels that you might find along the local highways.

Hillbilly told him "Hail, where I's from, we scrape dem off the ground and eat em'!"

LOL, I've done that with a few deer out front.

In my defense, I saw/heard them get hit by cars and the butchering commenced while they were still fresh.
The way I see it, they were dead, no matter what. They would either lay by the side of the road eventually stinking up the place, or we can have dinner for a month.

Gators? That really must be a southern Florida thing. I see armadillos all the time (and possum) up here but no gators. However outside of the building where I work there is a sign that says do not feed the Gators next to the retention ponds. Seriously? Do we really need that sort of warning?

If theres one thing I've learned from these forums, it's never underestimate the extent of human stupidity. Im sure theres some idiot out there who thought it was a good idea to give the 20 ft gator a meal. Otherwise, there would be no need for the sign. I bet said idiot is missing a limb or two........
