It may owe you nothing, but, i'm sure it's better than having to make payments on a replacement car. Again, best of luck. I know full well how much it stinks having your car out of commission (in my case, a slightly older car that's harder to find replacement bits for).

I'm sorry the Rapsmobile is in hospital.
      Hope he/it gets better soon!

Good to hear they sound like they're taking responsibility for it!

I had a dingle a couple of years ago, when a guy didn't bother to check his shoulder when he suddenly realised he was heading past his turn off.... screech bang.

Fortunately for him, first words out of his mouth were "I'm sorry, it was my fault", so, cos he did and he was cool about it, I was cool with him... (Let him pay me directly, rather than waste money and ratings through insurance.. give about a $200 difference between him paying me and his excess).

Hope it goes well for you Rapster

Just collected it. Chap reckons there's a chance of repair, though he did point to high mileage etc. Depends on a few factors. I could always buy it back as salvage from the insurance company if I want to get it repaired at my cost after they've paid me for a write-off. Yon bugger's reliable. Here's hoping.

I'd be wary of buying it back as salvage. If you then ever tried to sell it, you'd have problems with it being on a salvage title, no?

Don't take this the wrong way, but, it's a mid 90s Corsa. Reliable, yes, but, not an exceptionally rare or valuable car; thus having it on a salvage title may cause more headaches than it's worth.

Not trying to talk you out of it, just offering my 2p.

On the other hand, my car is not particularly valuable, and not exactly rare, but, i'd be really hard pressed to part with it. I love my car.

Reliable is part of it, but money is more than that. If I end up losing that car, replacing it with something as good is going to be difficult. It's not going to be that valuable anyway, with or without a salvage title. Just a few hundred in either case. Rather suspect affording something better is going to be awkward.

My best outcome is a full repair without any problems. Next best is the salvage. Not sure if salvage (effectively owned by someone else for a short amount of time) will mean it's inelligible for the scrappage scheme - suspect they'd make sure it would be. If I take that sort of plunge, that is...

Advice and thoughts are always appreciated, though. No offence taken.

I've beeen looking at the scrappage scheme for mine this weekend. Cat A & B are not eligible. Cat D is providing it has tax, MOT etc.

Cat C is eligible providing it passes the VIC test which i think means it has to be repaired to a roadworthy condition.

If you ask the insurance company nicely they might agree not to set a VIC marker (something to do with the identity of the vehicle for stolen etc etc) which means that it might still be eligible without work on it.

Um, Cat A, B, and C? I've not seriously looked at the scheme, since affording the extra payments would be nasty. Any information on those?

Category A has to be destoryed immediatly.
Cat B can't be repaired but can be stripped down for some parts.
Cat C & D could be repaired eventually.

I'm probably gonna flog mine for scrap/parts and get a reasonable secnd hand one.

                      Ah - gotcha.

Small bump in the front - took out the radiator and front bumper, plus a strut, but little else looks knackered. Hoping for C or D, then, if they don't repair it.

I have a pretty good idea my car won't pass it's next MOT. And a few hundred quid is my limit. It is always a gamble when buying a car like that. My last few have not lasted more than 12 months.

I'd love to be able to take advantage of the scrappage scheme, but I'd have to win the lottery. And to do that I'd have to play the lottery.

Their insurance company called just now (sounded as if she was in an outsourced call centre - relevant) and asked if I'd heard anything from the repair dudes. I explained it's a bank holiday and they said they wouldn't be able to get back to me until tomorrow as a result.

Her next words amused me. "I'll call the repair centre in that case."

It's a bank holiday! They won't be open! I assume since she was in another country she's not familiar with this particular issue, so I reserved myself for a chuckle or two.

Used to be that everywhere barring small corner shops were closed. There's limited opening hours for all stores now - same as Sundays, I believe (something like six hours maximum over a certain floor size, and most go for a 10-4 session).

Most normal businesses just close. Many of these have skeleton staffs in for certain jobs on overtime rates. As a wholesaler, we work the day before the shops, so the work we did Saturday and today goes out the door tomorrow to the shops so they can open up and sell it.

They're gradually losing their station. Not sure if this is good or bad.

The repair place just phoned - likely to be uneconomic for repair. They're going to run the figures and get them to the insurers very shortly. May pop down to them today and ask if they could do a sort-of repair from the scrappers down the road - insurance jobs have to be warrantied for three years, but if I buy it back as salvage and get it on the road under those conditions, I could have it back and going.
