  • question for sub way workers

Just a quick question because I am considering whether or not I am going to write a letter to the corporate offices for sub way. There is a restaurant by where I work, and I have gone there quite a bit in the past because its close and convenient.

I went in a couple of days ago, and ordered my sandwich (a foot long chicken breast on Italian Herbs and Cheese bread). They toasted it, and all was fine. Now came the time for toppings. I requested no lettuce, to which they complied. Still all is fine. I asked for cucumbers. They put ONE cucumber on each side. I asked for black olives. They gave me THREE black olives. One on each side and one in the middle. they originally had four in their hand but counted them out and threw one back in the container. Then I asked for onions...ended up with 2 pieces of onion.

Of course I asked for extra topping, to which they replied they could double the counts but they would have to charge me $1.50 for extra toppings. I replied no thanks, and paid my bill. I asked why they were being so skimpy on toppings, and they replied it was dictated by corporate Sub Way because they were losing so much money on $5 foot longs.

So should I write the letter? I don't know if I am being sucky or not, but I can guarantee I will go to McDonald's next door from now on.

?? I don't work for Subway, but I just got one today, and had one a few days ago. They weren't skimpy on the toppings at all. It may just be the manager who said it to his workers so he doesn't lose money?

Honestly complain to corporate, I get tons of toppings on my 5 dollar subs.

I haven't been to Subway in the very recent past, I think the last time I was there was maybe 3-4 months ago. However, I've never had that problem at any of the Subways I've been to. Toppings have always been plentiful. I would definitely write to either corporate or at least the local manager.

Yeah, I don't think this is normal. Management for that particular store must have told them to do that, but I doubt that comes from Corporate.

Also quite frankly if they were losing that much money on it they'd stop selling them. Don't tell me it's a loss leader when a lot of people will either buy nothing but the 5 dollar subs or none of them.

              Subway near work...almost no toppings.
              Subway near home...TONS of toppings.

The same sandwhich with the same toppings could easily have a quarter lb difference in weight and the one from the subway near home would be quite a bit thicker.

my sis works for subway and i know that from corprate that it is lose your job/franchise rule #1 do not charge extra for extra standard toppings.
they have diagrams sent to every subway corp or not that tell them standard portion size.

3 coucumber each side, at least 12 olives about half a cup of onions.

if they are skimping you call/write corp

We have at least 4 or 5 Subways within 5 miles of our house in various directions, and which one we go to varies among them depending on where else we're going. We go quite often, DH and I usually share a footlong for a fairly light, fairly healthy, cheap meal.

Never had skimpy veggies at any of them. I love the piled on lettuce, tomato, green peppers & cucumbers - all that and no fattening sauces, and I get a nice full tummy with no guilt over calories or price. All those veggies are why I go, you can't get them anywhere else, and never been dissapointed.

So YES, write corporate, and let them know that one store is ruining their good name. I for one, wouldn't ever go to Subway if they started to skimp on veggies.

                  Madness takes it's toll....

Subway is famous for letting independent operators diverge from the corporate standard. It's not a great thing for a national chain; consistency is one of the things that can make or break a national restaurant chain. Travelers are their bread and butter, and people want to know, if they're stopping in at a restaurant, they'll be getting what they know they're going to like.

I go to Subway frequently. It is pretty much my only regular "fast food" stop...although I really don't think of it as fast food.

We have two here in KW, and I have been to them all over, and I have never had a problem like what you are describing. I have occasionally had to ask them for more tomato (sometimes they don't put on enough for me, and I loves me some tomato), but they have never had an issue with that, nor told me I would be charged extra. I almost always have to ask them for even MORE oil and vinegar, even after I ask for extra, but I like my subs wetter than most, and my version of extra differs from most people's.....but again, I have never been charged for this.

In short, the Subway you went to has their head firmly wedged in their rectum. I would write corporate, and I would stop frequenting said Subway.

Subway has preset formulas for everything. Basically it's the 'rule of 6'. You get six olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickles, green peppers, hot/jalepeno peppers. Divide that in half if your sub is a 6". Onions and lettuce are about 1.5 oz (might vary depending on location).
Those are standard formulas. And the number one rule is you CANNOT (at risk of losing your franchise) charge for extra veggies or sauces.

Complain to corporate and don't stop until you get a response.
