  • CS.com blocked - again

Yep. My company's corporate security department did a mandatory restructuring of our "IT security".

Amongst the casualties - CS.com (this site) has been labeled as "adult humor" and has been blocked.

Another one - FireFox got torpedoed, big time. Gee, I often have to use Google (BTW - which we couldn't access most of the day) for solutions to the issues that come my way and honestly, you need a lot of protection going to some of the sites. Let's kill the only browser with very good ad blocking software.

They blocked CNN.com for the longest time until they realized what was going on.

The funny part is that Facebook was never blocked. I guess checking enws and searching for answers is more dangerous than spending hours playing games and chatting with friends?

My job (hospital) also axed CS.com when they revamped their security and etc. I think its just b/c it has 'sucks' in the title. Fratching comes up just fine though. As well as myspace and FB.

    Makes me sad...

      Why would they block Firefox?
Now the trouble about trying to make yourself stupider than you really are is that you very often succeed.

IE is easier to control on an enterprise network. It's Microsoft software, and it's built to be easy to interface with Office and other MS stuff - ACTIVE DIRECTORY. Rules and policies on computer access are created and enforced with Group Policy in AD. (not the "Don't use your computer for personal use" rule, more of a back end can't touch this that those)

It's much easier to create rules and enforce them on IE than FF.

Facebook (and MySpace and YouTube and most of those types of sites) are blocked from Staples HotSpots, which is interesting since this is allegedly for customer use and not employee use, but I digress.

I can, however, get to Facebook via the Facebook iPhone app on my iPod Touch. And apparently direct links to some of the Facebook games also work, though I don't play them.

I've never had that problem. But I've only ever had two jobs with computers. One where it was just for reservations, but I could use my laptop at work. The other where we had full reign.

I did however have this issue with universities in high school. EVERYTHING was blocked. They blocked angelfire, which made a few projects tough. I think google was the only working search engine. What amused me was that there were two computer labs. One that had all the blocks on it, and the Mac lab that didn't.

People wonder why our school bred so many Mac Lovers.

When I went out to California to attend my sisters wedding, I found the CS site blocked as "Adult Material" when I was at DIA.

Luckily, although they block one of the radio stations I used to listen to as a "hacking" site , they haven't blocked here.

                  CS.com was blocked here too.

Then I told my boss that I found the Unsupportable forum helpful as a resource for resolving IT issues and he gave me approval to white list the whole site.

This is where it's great working for a small company where lil ol me is the tech goddess.

I set our firewalls. And because we have to use some social networking sites to answer questions, none of them are blocked!

Only ones that are directly blocked are Adult Content-Pr0n. Everything else, including video sites like Hulu, are allowed, which is wonderful when the store is dead for three days and all the extra work is done.

The sad thing is that all this comes from the few abusers who have downloaded viruses and other spyware onto our network (and I thought we had very good anti-malware - allegedly).

Yes, IE is easier to set restrictions on, people used FF has a work around but they must have added in something that just kills it - I can install it and run it but then within 5 minutes it's asking me for credentials and then won't load any pages. Wait 10 minutes, rince and repeat.

I'm surprised that they didn't block any social networking sites - no business needs for them AND people abuse them, chatting and playing games on FB all day while ignoring their duties (yes, I've been guilty of that BUT my duties are always first, if I'm waiting for a reimage and no remote tickets - I may play a game of Farkle or two).

Kia, oh, yeah. I decide to go without a decent amount of sleep to play that game before bed.

By some miracle I'm now in 3rd place among my friends. My SIL is second, and a random friend of mine is in first. I'll NEVER beat his score--it's over a million.
