When I was younger my mom and dad got divorced. I lived with my mom but I still got to see my dad on weekends or every other weekend(I have a really bad sense of time from when I was a kid).

In second grade my dad had his car being repaired in a garage so he rode his bike to work. He had to work early in the morning, so I guess it might have been dark still. He ended up getting hit by a truck(hit and run actually, they never never found the guy), and he died.

Maybe about a week later I was in my room doing something. My mom and older sister were in the kitchen, and my nephew was in some other area in the house.
There were cloth curtains over the windows, and the sun was shining on them so they were all lit up.
I looked up, and saw the figure of a man from the torso up. These windows were almost to the floor, so there's no way a person was standing outside or I'd have seen more of them, plus there were plants and bushes in the way.
The figure was just standing there, and waving. I wasn't sure what I was seeing, and looked down for a second. I almost didn't even notice that I saw it. Then I looked up and it was gone.
I went to the kitchen to make sure my mom and sister were still there, and looked out back and didn't see anyone.
I still like to think it was my dad saying goodbye to me since he didn't have a chance to.

My family's house in TN is haunted by a man and at least one cat.

The man is Charlie, the husband of the previous owner. He died from cancer in the master bedroom and has hung around ever since. Everyone in the house has had some kind of encounter with him--hearing him call your name, bumping into you, etc. A few people have actually seen him, saying they had seen a man in a baseball cap when no one fitting that description was in the house. I never saw him myself, but I've heard him say my name and once he jumped on my bed and nearly knocked me out of it.

Christmas 2001. I'm getting ready to go to bed. Norench the cat had been in there all day, so I put her out back before turning in for the night. So I'm laying there trying to go to sleep when I feel a cat jump on the bed and start walking up to me. I thought maybe one of the other cats had been hiding other dresser, so I reach out to catch it and put it outside...except when I reach out there's nothing to grab. I turn on the light and there is no cat on the bed. Ghost Kitty paid me a visit a few more times.

My dad has said that Ghost Kitty has visited him too.
I question my sanity every day. Sometimes it answers.

When I was 19 years old, I was living in a house with a roommate. Anyway, she was at work, so I was alone in the house.

I walked upstairs at 14:25 to get my book that was in my room. I got the book and immediately went back down stairs. It took less than 5 minutes, but when I looked at the clock when I came down stairs it was 15:45. I thought the clock was messed up so I looked at my watch and every single clock in the house and they all said 15:45. I have no clue what had happened in that lost hour and ten minutes. It still bugs me 20 years later.

Last night, I took my cross necklace that belonged to my loving grandmother off to take a shower. I'm usually wearing it, because it brings me comfort knowing she wore it. I do wear other necklaces sometimes, but that is neither here nor there.

Anyway, I had put it on my bed, so I would put it back on after I got dressed. I forgot about it and didn't put it on. I didn't realize I wasn't wearing it till Mr. Mis had been in bed for an hour. I go into panic mode and run upstairs as best as I can.

I looked on the floor next to the bed with a flashlight, there was nothing on the floor. I accidentally woke Mr. Mis up, who said he would help me look for it in the morning.

When I was young and extremely stupid, I had lost a very expensive necklace and earring set my grandmother gave me, so I didn't want to lose this necklace too even though it's not expensive, but it has huge sentimental value and besides I felt protected when I have it on.

So, I get into bed and try to read, but I have a feeling I should go over to the other side of the bed again. I finally get up and go over there and my necklace sitting right in the middle of the floor. I'm sure if that is Ethan or my grandmother's doing.

The only shadow "people" I've seen has been the glimpse out of the corner of my eyes of something moving, where nothing could possibly be. Always disappears when I look directly at it. I haven't noticed it in years now, but at one time, I was told it was a protective spirit.

I may have told this story before, but maybe not. I once lived in an apartment complex that was haunted. Warning, this is long...

The whole thing started out as paint peeling off the walls in definite, and identifiable shapes. We had a bat, and a what looked like a halloween witch in flight. Once the shapes were made, the peeling stopped, rather than continuing on like you'd expect it to do. Other apartments had different things.

As time went on, the kids (actually a couple of girls, one of which was somewhat sensitive to the occult) started fooling around with a Ouija board to try and determine what was going on. Things got worse.

In some apartments, pictures taken with a Polaroid camera changed after the picture was taken:

          * Some of the apartments had wood paneling. The wood grain changed into shapes.

          * One of the men was an older individual with no teeth (full falsies) in when the picture was taken. The picture showed him smiling with a mouth full of nice white teeth (his dentures were not that white). His eyes looked dead white, and there was a cross in the wood beside his head, as well as what appeared to be a bull charging directly toward the camera on the other side of his head.

          * Pictures continued to change and mutate for days after the pictures were taken.

A closet door slid closed and smashed the ring of the tenant. Luckily it was a very thick silver ring, and all it did was smash it a little, and not his hand.

All the apartments had the popcorn ceiling. Things started to grow in the popcorn design. One apartment had the body of a huge snake on it. This was what actually convinced me that something was going on. Up until this point, I was just a bit cynical, even after having seen paranormal activity first hand before.

The snake shape ended at each end in a point. The renters pointed at once side and said that was the head (a cobra head at that). I didn't see it for a long time. Nothing. I almost gave up looking when it was suddenly there, almost as if it had struck at me.

The entire affair came to a head one night when my mother tried to get to the bottom of things. Mom was a medium, although she seldom did anything any more by this point. I'd watched her perform an up-table when I was younger, and she claimed to be pretty strong.

Anyway, it was determined that a "black witch" was part of the cause (for whatever reason) of the troubles. We had a picture of the woman in question with a side profile. Mom was using the Ouija board and she was answering it. Mom and her friend were getting annoyed because she wasn't answering the questions.

I noticed that the face in the picture was facing the board, and turned it away, at which point, Mom was able to communicate with someone a bit more friendly.

While she was doing that, I was sitting on the couch (ours, in our apartment, mind you) and I watched as the woman's picture turned by itself until it faced the board again, at which point, she regained control of the board.

I was sent to bed shortly after this, so I missed the remainder of the night, but I was told later that they able to figure out what was going on but wouldn't tell us "kids" much (I was 15 or 16 at the time) but they did take a picture of the board by placing it on a card-table placed flat on the floor. When they took the picture, the flash "snapped" audibly from the eye, and the resulting picture showed something white apparently oozing out from underneath the table. The ooze grew slowly over the next few weeks.

A few people supposedly came from UCLA to look into the whole thing and took all the pictures. I never heard anything more about it, nor could I find anyone at UCLA who knew anything, but then I didn't dig very deeply.

Things died down after this and eventually gave way to more mundane things (school let out for the summer, and we were teenagers...)

Oh, and one more thing, thanks to the awesomeness that is Google Maps, here is the complex:

I have a question that hopefully someone on the board can answer for me. I was wondering if the little guy saw Shadow People because he is the only one of my children not baptized?

Mr. Mis and I have both been baptized as well as our two oldest children. I was going to get the little guy baptized but I was still very angry with God. So, now I'm trying to find a Lutheran church that will baptized an 11 year old boy.

Anyway, back to the stories. Before we came up with the name "Ethan" for our resident spirit, the little guy and the big guy both called him the "invisible man". They only saw him as having a dark outline and was totally gray in that outline. They couldn't see his face or anything. No, he is not a shadow person. He looked like a complete human just gray.

He did manifest in baby girl's room. She told me she saw his uniform, boots and his hat, but couldn't make out a face. He then just disappeared. So, Ethan was a union solider during the Civil War.

He mostly likes to move things around or pace the hallway between the bedrooms. I once heard him in the hall bathroom. where he slammed the toilet seat down. Maybe, he knows baby girl hates it when the lid is left up. Who knows?

He sometimes likes to walk the stairs leading to the bedrooms and bathrooms. It sounds like he has trouble walking them, but he pushs on.

I've not actually experienced anything myself, but I have to tell you all about my cousin AJ's experience, as well as that of his mother, my aunt N. His father, my uncle M, passed away of cancer a few years back. My aunt (his wife) and a few other family members scattered his ashes in SD as he requested. One day, aunt N was sitting with AJ's youngest son, watching the video they'd taken of their journey and scattering the ashes. There was one of those singing bass things on their wall at the time, and it randomly started singing "Take me to the river, and drop me in--" as the scene on TV showed them doing just that with uncle M's ashes. Aunt N said she finally had to throw the bass out as it would do this at random times and creep her out. She swears it was uncle M messing with her. A little over a year after uncle M's passing, a tornado ripped through the town they live in, and tilted AJ's house. They elected to tear that house down and bring in a new one. One afternoon, one of the crew that was working on the new house stopped to speak to AJ, and told him that he'd spoken to his father (my uncle M) and that he was a great guy, etc. AJ got ashen faced and said that was impossible, his father had been gone a year now. At the same time, there was a photo taken of the progress of the house. In it, you can see the image of my uncle M. Anyone who looks at it will tell you (gasping and getting goosebumps of course) that it's him.

The only other experience I can think of, also didn't happen to me. A former co-worker told me once that she had spirits in her house. She saw shadows, and one night, she laid down on the sofa, and woke up with one of the sharpest swords in her sword collection laying on the coffee table next to her. The sword collection was in a completely different room, and no one was home. Between these stories and everyone here's stories, I am a firm believer in the paranormal, even though I would probably freak out if I saw anything!

I was just amazed at how completely unafraid he was of the shadow people, since from what I have heard 99% of people are terrified when they see the shadow people. My little guy has zero fear of anything he has seen that is paranormal. The living are a different manner!

He has told me from day one of living in our last apt. that he would get up to use the bathroom or get a drink of water and see a little boy with a bag on his head walk by him. So, the little guy would go out and try to talk to the little boy and find out about the bag on his head. The boy never spoke to my son or even showed signs that he head my son. He would just walk straight in the kitchen and disappear in the stove.

Of course, this is the same boy that when he was 6 years old use to tell me how beautiful heaven is, like he had seen it with his own eyes. He didn't get it from church, because we haven't gone to church since years before he was born and heaven isn't really talked about in the house. I could not believe all the details he told me about heaven. I would mostly listen to him with this look on my face.

your son sounds very much like i was when i was growing up (and still are to an extent nowadays) - the living annoy me at best, but the spirits intrigue me.

I have my dead aunt following my family around, we don't complain cus shes family, but my little girl sees her shadow form or from corner of her eye, she just tells her to shoo if she bothers her, its kinda cute actually. Several times when coming home ive seen the shadow in the upstairs window of my house, it still scares me every now and then. Hey at least it aint the mother in law

If it makes any difference, I've never been baptized (Mom believed it was our decision to be, and Dad wasn't religious), and never seen full shadow people. Only the glimpses out of the corner of my eyes, and very seldom.

Eric or anyone else who has seen Shadow People, what do you think they are? Jason Offutt has written a book called "Darkness Walks" that has stories from people who have seen the Shadow People and he says that they are not ghosts.

I haven't read the book yet, since the only way to get it is to order it and I haven't gotten my copy in the mail yet. I can't wait to read it.

When I was a little girl, I would be in bed and see what I thought was my mother standing in my doorway holding the laundry basket. I would wonder why my mother never said anything to me while she was there and never could figure out how she disappeared like she did. I remember asking her about it and she told me she never stood in my doorway after I went to bed, thinking back on it I realize now that what I saw seems to fit the description of a Shadow Person, but I have never heard of one being female.

                            Couldn't resist

I've been lurking for a short while, but upon finding this one I couldn't resist. Warning - it'll be long.

Firstly - Being baptised doesn't really affect this. You are either born sensitive, or not. There is a theory everyone can see them, but if you don't want to or are too closed minded (even subconsciously) you won't.
Secondly - Apparently I am one of those sensitive people. Though my skill is more in feeling what others do. That said, I've had a fair share of ghosties hanging around.

My first one was my dog. He protected me and my brother when we were small, babysitting us, even when we wandered off he sat with us until we were found. After he was put down from kidney failure, he often strollled the halls of our new house, looking after my baby sister.

Things were relatively quiet til I was 12 and began working with mum as she opened a coffee shop. We had quite the little poltergeist. He'd throw cans from shelves, shift things around and had quite a lot of fun pinching our cook's butt - something she HATED. Saw him only a couple of times, he was younger then me, and sad. Clear as day. We discovered later he was killed on the curb next to our shop a number of years later when he was 9 or 10. My bro, who was old enough to work friday nights, reported a man who would often watch him from near the toilets in the nursery complex we were part of. He gave off bad vibes.

Majority of my other sightings have been in the various houses I have lived in. My brother has a young girl who follows him around - even after he moved. When I lived there she often checked on me, I'm assuming to make sure I wasn't nasty to the bro. She was only a shadow to me, but he sees her clearly. The most recent was when I moved in with T a couple of months ago. A man sat in the the chair beside me on the first night, checking me over. He comes downstairs, where I live, sometimes, mainly when T isn't home. When she's home, he sticks with her. I don't know if she is aware or not, I haven't asked.

I'm sorry, last one. Zack, my 10 yr old neighbour, was hit and killed by a car 2 years ago outside his home. We bought the home of his remaining family not long after. It was in a poor state. Zack was still there, and pissed. Going inside often made you feel sick just standing there. He would creep up behind the workers to try and scare them - they felt him, commented on it. Mostly though, when I was there anyway, it just felt unbearably sad. He left when the house was completely rennovated - so did the bad feelings.

In my case, I was told it was a protective spirit, perhaps a deceased loved one. I always perceived it as if it were a small animal, almost cat-like. This, I think is mainly just my interpretation of what I'm seeing, and not necessarily what it really looks like because I only see it out of the corner of my eye.

Now that I think of it, I do recall another encounter with one, but it was someone else's protective spirit. I was staying a few days with a girl I knew years ago. I really liked her, and had driven out to Tulsa OK to try and convince her to move back to Denver with me. It didn't work out, but we stayed friends even after that.

At any rate, the second night I was there she insisted that I sleep in her bed, while she took the couch since she was shorter than I and could stretch out on it where I could not. Anyway, I could sense someone standing in the doorway for the longest time after settling down, and at one point sat up and stared at the doorway trying to see if it was her. There was nobody there.

The next morning, she said she never got up, and told me she suspected it was her friend, checking up on why someone else was in her bed. We figured it was jealous. This one did appear to be masculine after I thought about it.

As you can all tell, me and all three of my children are sensitives to different degrees. It is a part of us that we would be lost without. I tried to completely turn mine off when I was growing up in a very fundamentalist church that saw it all as evil and demonic.

My children never had to go through that because I told them it's part of who they are and no, not everyone has the "gift" as we call it and be careful about who they talk to about it. It does NOT make them evil or strange.

We think Ethan (our resident spirit) is protective of the family and does not like it when there is yelling and screaming in an angry manner going on in the house. It rarely happens but when it does Ethan lets us know he wants us to stop either by having light bulbs pop LOUDLY or LOUD banging on the table that no one is near.

Sometimes he gets in a silly mood and will move things in my way when I turn round. I think I have moved a box on my side of the bed at least five times today, because he keeps putting it back.

I do wonder about the protective spirit though, because there were a lot of times I was pulled out of extreme danger when I was a child and a teenager, but I also had a horrid childhood, so why not protect me from that? I don't know.

From what I have gone though with my children I swear they each have a protective spirit and they keep their protective spirits very very busy!
