      Update

Sorry I didn't update sooner, I just got home from work. My mom has been texting me throughout the day giving me what updates she could, and I had a convo with my grandma, and then my mom on the bus on the way home. Wow, so, I'm really REALLY pissed off right now after finding out more details about the whole thing.

First and foremost, Babygirl (herein known as BG) is going to be ok, though she's in for a long recovery. While the burns are 2nd and 3rd degree, they're confined to her hands and arms, and the doctors in Lubbock ran tests and determined she still has feeling in all her nerve endings, so the biggest worry is keeping the burns wrapped and clean. When I found that out, I went into the bathroom at work and cried.

My mom, Mama Lupo, is torn up about it because she had an incident over 20 years ago which left her with similar injuries and she still remembers the pain to this day. And the though of our little BG going through that is enough to make her cry.

Personally, I'm worried about my cousin and my aunt, who will be in charge of changing the wrappings. How are they going to stand listening to her screaming everyime they do? I feel helpless because there's nothing I can do to help, though my mom is going to be there for my aunt when she needs her. The most we can do, according to Mama Lupo is to just be there for emotional support as needed. BG and my cousin are expected to be allowed to return to El Paso in the next day or two.

Now, onto the part where Lupo gets pissed off. Upon first discovering BG's injuries, her other grandmother, whom no one in the family likes, and who has caused all sorts of problems in the past (which I can't go into, but suffice it to say, scum of the earth is complimentary when it comes to describing her). Well, Scummy decided she knew better than any piddly old EMT or doctor, so she would treat BG before taking her in for any medical treatment.

Her treatment? Slathering mustard on third degree burns, which were already blistering.

      Yes. That's right. MUSTARD.

Now, I know after some quick googling that mustard can be used to treat MILD burns, like sunburns, or water scalding, and it's purported to even ease the pain, but BG had 3rd degree burns that had already started blistering. By slathering mustard all over and rubbing it in, (when, according to google you're supposed to lightly apply it, sort of coating the burn AFTER it's cooled somewhat.) ended up making a royal mess of BG's wounds.

That's why she had to be airlifted to Lubbock. Apparently the ER staff back in El Paso basically said they weren't equipped to properly clean and treat burns after they'd been made a mess of like that, so I'm inferring that it was pretty bad if she had to be airlifted to be able to get somewhere in time to get the burns properly cleaned and seen to.

the even scarier part is this woman is a nurse. One would think she knows the levels of burns and what treatment would help or hinder, but she took a 3 year old already in pain and only added to the torment.

Gods, I have no words to describe the anger this caused. And the punishment I told my mom was pretty vile, to the point that I'm pretty sure I'd get in trouble if I even attempted to detail it here. That and some of the words I called her, too.

I'm off to work off my temper by cleaning something or cooking something.

Many, many thanks for the warm wishes and prayers, I'm forwarding them on to my family, and it has helped a lot, especially for my grandma and Mama Lupo to know there are still nice people out there.

I'm glad your little cousin is going to be okay! It's a long road, but she's got a whole loving family to give her love and support.

As far as her other grandmother...words fail me. Wonder if every member of the family has torn her a new one by now. Yikes.

On the up side, she's young, so she most likely will not remember the pain when she's older. Glad she's doing OK...I have no words for the grandmother. My god.

You know, there's actually a really good chance that Babygirl is going to remember the mustard incident. It wouldn't surprise me if she never forgave that woman.

            I wouldn't.

(I remember everything when I was 4 and fell off the trampoline. The stuff that happened afterwards is what's fuzzy)

Glad to hear it sounds like she's going to be okay, but cringe at the thought of the pain, while her dressings are being changed.

I have an incredible fear of being burned. So much so, that I don't even like lighting matches and such. I've never been burned any worse than the burning a finger on a hot oven rack and such, resulting in a small blister, so don't quite understand my seemingly irrational fear.

I don't necessarily believe in reincarnation, but have often wondered if I had been severly burned in previous life.

As far as ScummyGram, all I can say is she can't understand normal thinking.

I'm glad the little one has been doing ok so far, and I was having growly mean thoughts earlier at the combination of vinegar/mustard and BLISTERS. Yow. Mamma Bear in me would be ...unpretty for that.

Poor kid. Sending hugs, comfort, and prayers.

And the rubbing mustard on burns, . I'd have a terrible time forgetting about that, let alone forgiving the person who did that.

About the bandage changing: I know that in my family, we use stuffed animals to comfort us when we get really sick/injured. Maybe a teddy bear (or similar) would help her while they have to change the bandages...?

Hugs and prayers to poor BG!

My little one got a third degree burn on her hand last year - it was no fun. I would suggest giving the pain meds about half an hour before the dressing changes, when possible - it helps a lot. Poor little sweetie. Mustard?!?!

BG is now home safely. And according to Mama Lupo, there are already signs that her poor little hands won't ever be the same. One is a completely different color, whiter than white. We're still hoping that the fact she's so young will work in her favor, and this isn't permanent.

She's in for even more pain ahead because there are still some blisters that haven't popped, and if they don't deflate on their own, they're going to have to be lanced (at least I think that's what may have to happen). Her arms and hands are going to have to have the dressings changed several times a day, and the dead and burned skin scrubbed off, according to my mom. At least that's what happened to her when she had her incident years ago.

Megg, I'll pass that info about the pain meds along the proper channels, and I may buy BG a stuffed toy and mail it, just to feel like I'm doing something.

Luekodermata. I wouldn't worry about it too much for now. Just hope that she gets healed to begin with. She will be crying for a while.

I'm really sorry it happened, but very happy its all going better.
