  • What to do in Houston?

My longtime friend The King is in Houston this week on business. He will have a decent amount of downtown, and as I am his personal physician (i.e., bartender), I prescribed him some fun to reduce some of the stress in his life. We won't go into the stress factors, but I would like some help from you folks as far as suggestions for stuff for His Majesty to do.

He is married with kids, and they are not with him. I am not suggesting brothels or anything, merely letting you know his situation. Whatever I think of his wife (Pilot and I refer to her as "She Whose Name We Dare Not Speak"), The King is happily married, so I am not looking for any type of fun to counteract that. Just so we are clear.

I did a little google magic online, and found him some entertaining looking bars and restaurants near his downtown hotel. He does have a car, so he can travel around Houston. He wanted to take in a sporting event, but football is out of season, baseball is still in spring training, the Rockets are away all week, and there is no NHL team there. Any sporting events you know of would be welcome. Also, he enjoys wine, but I could not in my limited time frame find any decent wine bars in Houston. Any knowledge of one would also be most welcome.

Any other suggestions for other activities (mostly nighttime) will be greatly appreciated as well.

What kind of nightlife stuff does he like?

The Museum district is pretty fun, depending on what you like. Theater district is pretty spiffy, I'm told, but I wouldn't know what kind of shows he'd like, if any. But knowing what kind of person he is helpful, outside of sports, since, as you said there's really nothing going on right now. Rodeo Houston is ongoing at Reliant stadium for the next few weeks. In regards to wine bars, there's a really good one (so I'm told) called SoVino's. It's a wine bar/bistro that specializes in South American flavors. Sonoma wine bar is also, (again, so I'm told) pretty good, and they have a wine tasting every Saturday, I believe.

I like to go to McGonigel's Mucky Duck pub here, especially on Wednesdays, since it's Irish music session night, free cover. They're a supper club with live music venues and do a lot of live music, local and non, and the atmosphere is wonderful, (and this is from someone who generally hates going to pubs and bars in general). See calendar of music events HERE

Um...yeah, without knowing what kind of nightlife activities he likes that's about all the recommendations I can give for now. hope it helps.

I second the Rodeo. It doesn't sound like fun until you go.

There is an AHL (NHL minor league) team in town, the Aeros. They play tonight (Saturday), then Friday night. I've never been, but I went to some AHL games in San Antonio and they were fun, cheap and not crowded (more like empty!).

If he likes bars, he could check out Washington St. It's the only real "strip" of bars in town, and there's a few inoffensive (wouldn't call them awesome) wine bars there.

If you're looking for a strip club, my fiance highly recommends Centerfolds on 6166 Richmond Avenue.

The problem is, I am not all that sure what my friend does enjoy doing, it has been so long since we have hung out. However, I am taking all suggestions, and relaying them to him. I like the minor league hockey game idea, by the way.

Try the Last Concert Cafe for a really cool laid back hippy dippy kinda vibe. The place is 420 friendly and has a fasanating history.
          It can be found here...

If your ever looking for something really cool you can go to Joystix downdown by Minute Maid Park. It's a place that fixes and sells new/old pinballs and video games that's connected to a dive bar. On the 1st and last Friday of the month they open the place up with all the machines set to free play ($15 admission from 9pm-2am)

The Mucky Duck is awesome, yes. But if he can't make it over there, the Fox and Hound English Pub over on Westheimer Rd (that's basically "restaurant row") is awesome.

If he wants to meander some malls, the First Colony Mall in Sugar Land (10 minutes south on 59) is the best one. There's another mall on Westheimer called The Galleria. If he happens to stop in, advise him to stop by TeaVana and taste test some of the teas there. It's a great little store.

Meyerland area (western "down town" houston) has lots of great shopping. Lupo and I would spend hours on end there and there's a little italian cafe that was good. Can't remember what it's called though, I think it started with a C.

Downtown, if he has time, has several great museums. Just be careful because there's a craptastic round-about there that is poorly done.

What area will he be staying in? That way we can give you a better idea of where to go without him getting too lost in town.

Collina's is what it's called, dear.

Also, if he likes books and whatnot there is a HUGE 2 story bookstore, and a huge 2 story Half Priced Books here in town, too.

HPB yes, the one in Rice Village. the old Alabama theatre is the other bookstore, a B&N Bookstop now. Two different two story bookstores. Frickin' huge. I'm not allowed in there by myself. EVER. >.>

Well I'm rarely anywhere near Downtown, especially at night so I'm not gonna be very helpful. But yes the Theatre district is awesome if he's into stage performances that is.

But we can recommend better if we knew the area he'll be at. Houston is a big city.

I thought I mentioned it in the OP, but looking back, I realized I really didn't. He will be staying right downtown in one of the main hotels, and he has a car, so he can get anywhere. For bars, though, I have been trying to steer him towards the downtown scene....it wouldn't look good with his company if he got busted for a DUI. Especially since he is based in the Middle East. (He is enjoying a lot of booze and pork right now on his return to the States!)

I don't know about Houston, but in nearby Galveston, there is a waterpark and the Moody Gardens.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

One of the two story bookstores I think Lupo was talking about is a Barnes and Noble in River Oaks, at the corner of Shephard and West Gray. There's a garage behind the store (don't ask how many trips it took me to realize that!).

Where is this 2 story Half Price Books? I must know!!!

I just realized I live inside the loop but have spent more time out and about in Tomball than near my apartment. How lame does that make me?

It's a Barnes and Noble Bookstop, I believe, corner of Shepard and Alabama. Look for the old sign for the Alabama Theatre, it got converted into the store, which is why there's so much space.

It's in Rice Village, right on the corner of Rice and University. Easily accessible by bus, for me...which isn't necessarily a GOOD thing.
