Survey: Did you have to learn square dancing in gym class?

Apparently, square dancing is the state dance of New Jersey (my roommate's class went on a field trip to the state house in Trenton today). Her theory is that this is why we had to learn square dancing in gym class in elementary school. ("Swing your partner" is not fun when you are the smallest girl in the class. Unless you like to fly.)

So, I thought I'd take a little CS Survey:

What state are you from and did you have to learn square dancing in elementary school?

Michigan, yes and it sucked. We only did it for two days learning various dances but then never did it again.

I'm from Indiana originally. Yes I have repressed memories of having to learn square dancing in gym class.

British Columbia and no, we never learned any dancing in gym class. We mainly played sports ( hockey~! ). With a couple weeks of gymnastics every year that no one, not even the teacher, liked so we just sort of mumbled our way through it and resumed playing sports.

We would move from sport to sport. Playing each for a few weeks and learning how to play them better. We did every traditional sport we had the equipment for ( soccer, hockey, flag football, baseball, volleyball ). Every summer Olympic sport. And a few odd ones like Ultimate and badminton. And we were permitted to play full contact Rugby when there was enough snow outside to pad the ground on tackles. I tried to tackle my teacher once. It did not end well. Or more precisely, he was neckless brick shithouse so my 14 year old weight alone could not stop his forward momentum. We had to dogpile him >.>

We also learned industrial first aid in gym class, and were certified at the end of it.

Wisconsin here, and I remember learning SOME kind of dance in gym class, but I don't remember if it was square or line dancing (though I'm pretty sure it was one of those two, or maybe both.) We only did it for a couple days, during my middle school years. Sometime between 6-8th grade, though I don't remember which specifically. I actually remember somewhat enjoying it, and I wouldn't mind taking dancing classes someday.

Yea, as you know I'm from NJ. Not only did we learn square dancing, which was lame and I don't remember, but we also learned swing dancing which actually turned out to be useful.

I didn't learn square dancing in school, but a distant uncle competed professionally. We did learn line dancing. Bleh.

North Carolina- We learned square, swing, shag, and some ballroom dancing.

Nebraska - early 80s. Square Dancing.

We even had a "Special Square Dancing Night". We had to go out and buy Square Dancing Clothing or Western clothing (I remember I hand a shiny pink western shirt with white fringes and a denim swing skirt). Then we all performed Square Dancing for our families.

I lived in Texas first through fifth grade, and every year in gym we did square-dancing. I hated it, but I couldn't manage any of my usual tricks to get out of participating in gym.
