Rine, I wish I lived in your part of Tennessee! I was only a few years behind you and that sounds amazing.

        Grew up in NC.
We did square dancing every year from 4th - 8th grade. One year (don't remember which, might have been 4th or 5th) we had to dress up in "cowboy/girl" outfits and do a performance for the PTA.

Thanks for reminding me OP, just when I thought I'd managed to erase those memories.

Best memories of gym I have ...
My greatest memory from gym class was in my first (of three) high schools, when we were doing weight training. This may sound odd for someone who was a 120 lb. stick in high school, but this was an amusing moment, because our teacher decided to see who would max out on the leg press, and all the meatheads were certain it would be them. The last two standing, however, were not meatheads: one was a girl who was a dancer, and the other was this 120 lb. stick who was a cyclist. We smoked the meatheads. It blew their tiny little minds.

lol. I took a strength training class with my cross-country coach as the teacher. Imagine all the football players being in shock when he smoked everyone at pull ups. A 54 year old man at the time doing so too. Then again he also smoked me and some friends in a mile race we ran.

Idaho. Yes we did square dancing in elementary school. Would have been the '80s for me. To be fair, we also learned and Israeli folk dance and a Greek dance of some sort. I liked it.

Wow, this thread got more attention than I expected!

I should have made a poll to see what the percentages were...yes, no, or some other dance but not square dancing...or something...

Wisconsin, and I did indeed have to learn square dancing, both in elementary and middle school.

                  Christ, I hated it.

From south Florida. I had to learn it in elementary school(mid to late 90's), but in music class, not gym class.
I actually really enjoyed it and preformed with some other kids from the class during a school talent show, and we went to some old folks trailer park and danced for them too haha.

Never had a class that taught any kind of dance besides that though.

My track coach's first name, I shit you not, was Conan. Naturally he was brutal on us. Of course, to us he was old, being all of 26 at the time. And we gave him a lot of shit, for his name and other things....until someone got a hold of the school's sports record book. Conan's name was all over it....the dude had been a stud when he had gone there. We still gave him shit after that, but it was somewhat muted with respect and awe.

I'm not from the States, but at my highschool (and probably every highschool in the country) it was mandatory to learn a dance called Les Lanciers during freshman year. The highschool held a Lanciers party (kinda like a prom) every year.

nodnodnod... That's what I was talking about. I seem to recall it being in grade school, back when I was very much against playing with, or even touching girls, and we had to hold hands!

Seems like kids everywhere are forced into this horrid practice! We must put a stop to it!
