    I'm in an upstairs apartment. Sure, I was 200-300 miles away, but it still swayed pretty notably.

    My reaction was, "Oh, hey, earthquake... hmm, it's still going... wow, this is a long one." Then I hopped over to the USGS site and was a bit surprised to find a posting up already, and even more surprised to find out how far away it had been.

      I spent two years in Japan. During that time, I felt enough quakes powerful enough to move the ground (though not generally higher than 4, I think) that I was well prepared for the SF Bay Area.
