  • Ack! Kittens!

So, the feral cat that lives out at my workplace has, once again, deposited kittens somewhere silly in the warehouse, where they were rounded up.

Does anyone in the Lakewood/Los Angeles area know of a no-kill shelter that will take ferals or a fostering group that would do the same?

There are three of them, currently labeled as Tux, DOS, and Amiga, and currently, they've been dumped on the only people foolish enough to deal with them; Nekojin and me.

We can't keep them and can't afford to really deal with them properly. They're not quite weaned, although their eyes are open. So if anyone could help us get them situated somewhere not in our tiny apartment, we'd really appreciate it.

Oh, and pics will be forthcoming.

    As promised: Pictures!

(all pics hosted @ tinypic - image only, no ads)

First up, a shot of Tux. This one's the biggest of the three by a good margin.

DOS and Amiga. DOS is the snowshoe-looking one on the left. Looks like that one'll be fuzzy.

Finally, a face shot of little Amiga. This one is notably smaller than either of the other two.

I haven't had any time with them, but Amiga responds to having it's face rubbed. The other two were mostly just scared, and probably hungry.

        nawww, they're so cute.

Do the ASPCA euthenaise animals? Just curious, since I know that the RSPCA (equivelent of the ASPCA) and the Animal Welfare League down here both have no-kill policies unless the animal has a fatal disease/injury.

AwwwwwFUZZY! If I wasn't 3000 miles away we'd take the gray one in an instant.

I don't know about other states, but the MSPCA policy is also no-kill unless there's really no other option.

The little grey one isn't really grey, but tawny brown with fuzzy pale guard hairs. Those will smooth out when it gets older, and it'll get more snowshow-like.

Example of a Snowshoe. Note the smattering of paler longer hair through the bolder markings.

Our younger was from a litter the momma-cat had 2 years ago, and he's a fine example of a snowshow, although with a sleeker coat. He actually looks very much like the first image on the South Pole Snowshoes website.

I'd suggest that you start with the yellow pages online and search for no-kill shelters and/or fix and release places. More than likely it'll only take a few calls to find them, because if you call one that is NOT a no-kill shelter, they will more than likely let you know who is.

Of course, a box or cage, and a few hours at the supermarket may well solve your problem as well. People love kitties.

Have you managed to catch the mother? D's old roommate used to catch the strays that lived under her porch and took them in to be fixed, and then released them once they had healed, so they stopped making more. One mother kept getting away and would regularly deposit a litter on them. My youngest is one of them.

Anyway, if you can catch her and get her fixed, the problem of overpopulation diminishes just a bit.

Awwww! The little b/w one looks like my Fred Astaire! Found him all lost and hungry in my neighborhood last summer.

Thus bringing our total of found kitties now to 5.

I agree with Eric - if you can trap the mom and have her fixed, you'll be doing both her and your workplace a huge favor.

Makes me wonder again what happened to the kitty that was found while they were unloading a truck at work one day a few months ago. I was on my way up from lunch and in the lobby stairwell was one of the managers and an animal control guy transferring this little gray tabby from a cardboard box to a carrier. He was probably a month or so old at the most, and was laying there crying but not really making any noise. They found him at the back of the trailer behind a pallet. Who knows how far he travelled to get there. Wish I could have taken him home with me.

There is something here called The Notch Project. Volunteers fix feral cats, put a notch in one of their ears and then free them when they are healed. Animal Control won't take these in.
