3 kittens is a fairly small litter (consider yourself lucky). I'd suggest asking friends and family and network out to see if you can find homes for them yourselves (since shelters can be inundated now - especially with the way the economy is).
You'll never know what kind of luck you may had - we were able to adopt out 5 of 7 kittens when we had a similar situation pop up when we lived in NJ.
