It won't be a final that will live long in the memory but they were the better team. I wasn't impressed with the Dutch at all as they spent half the game kicking the Spanish players all over the pitch.
I was at a mate's who was watching it. Tea was proferred, so I decided to partake and watch the spectacle.
You're joking, right? Besides the leaping kick, which was rightfully penalized, the Netherlands tackled hard but weren't purposely harmful in the majority of their attempts.

Um, that kung-fu kick should have been a sending off instead of yellowed, as should one of the other fouls, as well as many more yellow cards that they deserved. They were going for the player on as many occasions as possible, not the ball.
Not joking. Not one bit.
Neither side were angels in that one, but when a team gets six or seven out of the eleven on the field with yellow cards then you know something's wrong.
I am new to soccer and that seem rougher then normal. We got to watch it at a local movie theater in 3D. It rocked. Kept having to the tell the hubby now new tv.

The kung-fu kick was definitely deserving of a red card but the actual red card was not.

I think the actual red card was more to do with the referee having to use it because of continual pulling/tugging/cheating. He'd gone too easy on them to start with. It's not entirely unreasonable to do that, as it's the world cup final and it's going to have major repercussions if one side plays with nine players for most of the match, but the players themselves didn't help matters. They just kept piling in on each other instead of the ball.
It's gone from football to being cheatball - who can get away with pushing the rules more than the other team wins.
I didn't like the way the Dutch played.....I'll still support them, but grrr.
So, I am also new to soccer but I like it (was actually bored trying to watch the All-Star Game....) and I understand the next cool thing is the English Premiere League? I need to figure out who I should support....haha.....must do research. And find somewhere that will actually broadcast it.

The kick to the chest should have been red carded, period.
The actual red card handed out wasn't a red card per se, but was the second yellow to the same player, so a technical red card, rather than a flagrant red card, if that makes sense.
And one last time....VAMOS ESPANA!

I just didn't see the actual red card as worthy of a card at all.

I think part of it was that the referee had no choice. The players on both sides were going in for the kill each time, rather than the ball. Free kicks and bollockings, as opposed to cardings, weren't getting the message across. The amount of blatant fouling going on required a firmer hand, and the red card was a result of a deliberate foul, and it was cumulative with the earlier yellow.
Ref did his best, but the players did their worst.
