Like any ring, take it off if you're working with heavy machinery, or any time that you have higher risk of an accident. Not only is there a risk of the ring getting caught in the machinery (or elsewhere), but if you injure your hand, that ring needs to come off in the ER. And they're not going to pull it off over your finger. It gets cut off, or cracked off (tungsten carbide or other ceramics, and don't worry: they don't use a hammer).
Oh, and if it's gold or silver, take it off if you're doing rough work. Those are both soft metals and will scratch very easily. So not when you're playing in the sand.
