When my cousin lived in Scotland she was shocked by people asking to "Knock her up some time."

Oh, I know. And trust me when I tell you that most Americans have that same urge to giggle when your lot refers to "smoking a fag." Over here, if you said you were off to smoke a fag, most people would think you were about to go commit a hate crime.

LOL I game with a bunch of Brits, and am on teamspeak with them all the time. I am now trilingual, american, bad american and brit gamer =)

It is hysterical, 2 of them are geordies and one is a glaswegian. When things get exciting it can get really difficult to understand them - though even the geordies think our glaswegian is fairly incomprehensible normally, let alone when he gets excited and reverts to slang. Sort of like this ....

Though it can be hysterical when the rest of the EU chimes in, we have norwegians, swedes, dutch, a couple danes and a couple romanians and polish ...

I've just been to a museum where they have a large collection of old household product packaging.I bet in America there was never a brand of washing podwer called "Omo" like we used to have here!

Oh dear, the food kind of meatball . I just knew that I should have edited it, as soon as I clicked the submit button I knew.

Anyway, the only alternate meanings I know is either an ethnic Italian or someone fat. I'm not sure either is synonymous with faggot (slang). Does it have other meanings?

I always have to be careful around my great-uncle, who's American.

Reason why? Everytime I start talking about thongs, I remember that you guys call them flip-flops over in the US and that thong refers to what we refer to generally as a G-string. (us Aussies consider it more of a blanket term)

Although IIRC, someone once asked me what a chook was in one of my threads....I tend to say "Running around like a headless chook" a lot. It means headless chicken

Oh and also, in Ausland, we even have our own regional variations. For instance, Devon sausage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devon_(sausage)) is known as Fritz in my state. There was a commercial going around a few years back that highlighted the point. It was for SA Lotto and had two guys dressed up in Leiderhosen, doing a German dance and splashing tomato sauce onto one another. The caption at the bottom said "Fritz and sauce." The idea was that South AUssies would be the only ones to get it

When I lived in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, a chook was a knitted winter hat. This was supposedly Finnish in origin.

I picked up a great movie from Britain called "Ghostwatch", and although I understand what they meant, I could not help but laugh whenever they refered to the room beneath the stairs as the 'gloryhole'.

That doesn't sound very Finnish, although I am not any sort of expert. Actually, it sounds an awful lot like the word toque, which is a French word most likely with Arabic origins. It basically means "round" and is used to describe pretty much any sort of round, brimless hat.
