Favorite Foreign Foods/Sweets?

I used to be able to find Japanese rice-paper candy. You didn't unwrap the candy before popping it into your mouth; the wrapper was edible rice paper. Perhaps I need to look harder for it.

Cost Plus World Market I know has. And if you find a store with an Asian section it is usually right next to the Pocky.

And speaking of Pocky I didn't know they had a Green Tea flavor. Crap. *adds to growing list of treats to go find*

patiokitty, I'm super jealous! My university has nothing of the sort. I LOVE mochi. Love it!!

Other favorites include tiramisu (I make kick ass ladyfinger cookies myself as the base). I also love pocky and ramune. Also, chinese sweet buns, the ones with the cream cheese filling? So yummy. I don't much like sweets to begin with, so most of my favorite foreign foods are savories.

Example, I love sushi, tuna especially. I love to cook Italian food, too, I love pasta and beans. Baba ganoush, hummus, tahini, etc. I don't have favorites, I suppose, I like most ethnic/foreign food flavors, and am willing to try most things once.


I want mochi now.

I so loved the kinder eggs when I was in Germany. Haven't had any since and that's been close to twenty years. I think I still have the toys somewhere.

Belgian truffles, the darker the better. salmon sushi, tuna and dashi are awesome too. went to a little ma and pa sort of sushi place before I moved to indy and blew $80+ on waay too much sushi and sapporo. had a very good night

Sushi is awesome, and my favorite sushi place makes an awesome mochi ice cream. (Although, I like regular mochi.) A friend studies Japanese history/culture and makes us yummy treats all the time, like mochi and takoyaki. My only issue with Asian food is my complete lack of skill with chopsticks. I can manage sushi, but anything more delicate and I need a fork.

Indian food is yummy, although I can rarely make it out to KC to go to my FAVORITE place ever. Every dinner comes with free lassi, rice pudding, chai, and this mango ice cream on a stick thing. I also love Greek/Mediterranean food....so good. I could live the rest of my life on pita, tzaziki sauce, and kabobs. Oh, and olives. And spankopita. The first time I had Challah bread, I decided that I could happily give up bacon and be Jewish. OMG Challah.....

Oh, and perogies. A friend of mine makes amazing perogies and other Russian things that mostly involve noodles and potatoes. Om nom nom. Sadly, she hates borscht, because I've always wanted to try it. Ah well. I think the next ethnicity on our list to try is Ethiopian, and my fiance has scoped out a Korean place he wants to try. I'll try anything once, as long as there's no mayonnaise involved.

There's a speciality European market downtown...I should really go there sometime and try some new things. Hmmm, maybe when I start getting paychecks..

As for foreign stuff, I LOVE pocky, but I also LOVE Hershey Bars.

Important note-We Aussies do not sell Hershey bars on a regular basis.
My uni carries the Cookies and Cream ones and a couple of old-fashioned sweet shops carry them as well.

GREEK FOOD. omnomnom...granted, at the end of the day, you reek of garlic. We put a LOT of garlic in our tzaziki sauce.The next day it's so strong, I bet it'll burn a Twilight book with one drop. It's especially good with Farmer's Market tomatoes!

If you want something Asian, there is an Asian area around Chamblee, GA. I am told you can find anything there. The people who told me know what they are talking about. They ain't from around here.

I've actually seen them in a couple of Krogers I've been to. Nothing exactly specific location-wise. I'd figure Publix would be the one to have them (and I'm sure they do in some), but I've seen them mostly in Kroger.

All you US folk should try a Tim-Tam slam.

Basically you bite the ends off of the tim-tam, then use it as a straw to suck up a drink, usually a hot one.

See if your grocery store has Mrs. T's Frozen Perogies (in the freezer section, of course). The Dillon's up here has them, so there's a good chance they'll be in the Krogers down there. My friends who study Russia-type-stuff say they're almost as good as the real thing.
