That way we knew what weekends to get our groceries immediately after work on Friday, and scurry home and batten down the hatches for the weekend. It literally wasn't safe to try to shop on home game Saturdays.

    Gah.
Jeez! It's not that bad here. Actually, if you wait until the game starts, you're usually safe to go out for a few hours. It's the traffic before and after that's killer. Of course, we bow to the great god of basketball more than football....bad thing there is you're never sure WHEN the home games are gonna be. They're usually on Tuesday/Thursday, but if ESPN is like, "Yeah, we're going to want to move that to Wednesday" with a week's notice, then it's moved. Can't park on campus, can't drive anywhere. If you live close to campus/downtown like I do, you sure as hell don't move your car.

Especially when we play Nebraska. ;D (Or KState or Mizzou or....)

Having the entire freaking city grind to a gridlocked halt is one of the things that offends me the most.

You think they'd tolerate that if it were anything but Allmighty Football? Can you imagine an SCA event shutting down traffic like that? You think THAT would be tolerated?

That and my neighbors yelling on the street that "They won."

The yelling on the street is kind of cute, actually, and I don't mind someone publicly expressing elation. Everyone here knows everyone else, so we know certain neighbors are going to get jacked up over a game. But "We won?"

I'm sorry, unless you put on a uniform and ran around the field with an actual football in your hands, no you didn't win. You can't win if you don't play. You team you root for, but are not a member of, won.

"Oh..you have to be a fan of ONE of the schools"

      :
I know. People are very shocked when they find out that this statement is not, in fact, true about USC (South Carolina, not Southern California) and Clemson. Especially when they discover I actually went to USC. Then I am simply a baby eating blasphemer.

The most annoying this of all about this, if that if you show even a fraction of this sort of fanaticism about anything other than sports, you are a geek or a nerk or a dork. But with football, you are perfectly accepted going out shirtless with your shaved head painted orange or whatever. Nothing childish or geeky about that.

Um. Go ask one of our clients. They're right at the end of Currie Road.

(and that's as far as I'm going to go with identifying them.)

I'm close enough to GB to have gone past apathy to complete and utter annoyance at the ridiculous obsession with the Packers.
When I was in NJ, I'd tell people I got kicked out of WI for not being a football fan.

I had a coworker last night ask me if I took tonight off just to watch the Packer game.

              Uh, no. Just no.

I don't like sports really at all. Just because I work out and look like I'm in ok shape doesn't mean I play or like them. If I could, I'd block all sports channels on my TV. I can't throw a ball to save my own life. I can throw a shoe, however, like no other

I do watch a fair bit of hand-egg. But, because I don't live and breathe the game, plus I don't see the point of memorizing all the stats...I'm not considered a "real fan" by most people in this town. Sorry, but fuck that. Why would I spend time committing such things to memory...when they change every year, not to mention every week! I'll fill up my mind with sports car trivia, thanks.

Oh, and just because I *live* here, don't expect me to like the fucking Pirates, OK? The might be the "home team," but they suck ass. They haven't had a winning season in nearly 20 years, haven't been the World Series in over 30. Yet, because of the TV endorsements, they still earn a profit? Why not put some of that cash towards buying some players that don't suck!

While we're at it, why is it that when I say I like racing...people automatically assume I mean NASCAR? Sorry, I don't find the idea of seeing near-identical cars drive around in a circle 500 times. Again, fuck that. Bring on the F1, the WRC, sports car racing, vintage car racing (the PVGP is my favorite!), etc.

BTW, I've actually driven the PVGP course. Not on race day, but usually on the night before the race. Most of the course is already blocked off, but the stop signs and other annoyances are removed--there are a couple of places you can go around for a couple of laps. Great fun in a tweaked Tercel

I've only ever cared about the sports teams of the cities I've lived in, and even that stems more from local pride than any real love for sports.

I'm smack dab in the middle of Eagle and Phillies territory.

When the Phillies won the World Series, there was a RIOT.

I'm talking cars overturned, street lights knocked over, couches set on fire in the streets, attempting to turn over a bus....

                    I hate sports.

Everyone calls it hand-egg here. And yes, we have the CFL.

You aren't expected to be a fan of any kind of sport here. At least not until the local hockey team makes it to the playoffs, at least round two or three. Then you either need to declare that you support another team, or care. But it's perfectly acceptable to be a fan only occasionally. Although my husband's grandfather made a lot of money betting on the (Montreal) Canadians back when he came to Canada. Everyone else at the factory felt obligated to bet on the (Toronto Maple) Leafs, because they were the Leafs, and this was in English-speaking Canada.

I'm a football fan, and I truly adore my teams and truly hate others, and I even get excited about preseason, but I cannot stand the drunks and dumbasses that pop up when it's game time. Last night was my school's season opener, and I almost didn't want to go because of the riff raff (I probably shouldn't have anyway, my school lost and my favorite pro team played a much better game at the same time).

So please, don't think we're all stupid.

Definitely not. The problem isn't with sports fans in general. It's with the idiots that can't comprehend that someone ISN'T a sports fan that I have issues with.
