  • Something funny happened over the past year when I wasn't looking.

I gained weight. Lots of it.

Tired of looking and feeling like a slug, I started a low carb diet and have been exercising 5 days a week. I'm not quite sure how many pounds I've lost (since the battery was dead in my digital scale and I kept forgetting to buy a new one) but I do know I've at least lost some inches. Right now I'm wearing a pair of jeans that I couldn't wear 2 weeks ago since they were so tight around the waist it felt like I was being squeezed to death by a boa constrictor.

Right now I'm wearing a size 12 and hope to get down to a size 8.

*off to get some lunch of lean meat and veggies*
I question my sanity every day. Sometimes it answers.

    • I have no idea what happened.

I went to the rents last night, didn't watch what I ate (it was healthy, and I even allowed myself 2 glasses red wine) I only had a 30 min walk, and this is my "fat week."

I've lost a pound. I was fully expecting to gain. hmmm.

      • Chap at work is interested in selling his rowing machine - only used it four times. Anyone got any ideas how good those things are? He reckons it will work more than just the legs etc, but I'd be interested on first-hand opinions from someone not wanting to sell an expensive piece of kit.

        • Rowing machines are actually a pretty good full body workout. They work legs, core and shoulders and back and and and. TTO used to do rowing in HS, and he still has the broad shoulders that it gave him.

          • Bike - 45 minutes, 722 calories. Ow (ish).

Rowing machine - I have a maximum figure in mind for it, though not exactly certain where I'd put it. Problem is, his contract with us is up in the near future, so he's going to be after what money he can get, and he claims it's a nice piece of kit, so cheap is unlikely to be an option.

              I know the feeling

Went to the gym every day so far this week. Monday I did 3.3 miles in 64 minutes. I haven't noticed the mileage that last couple days, but I did about 40 minutes Tuesday and today, and about an hour yesterday. I need new sneakers, though. I'm thinking of trekking down the only specialty running store I know of (well, that I'm willing to drive to, anyway) and have someone who knows shoes help me find the right pair. The ones I have now make the outside of my left foot ache. I'm trying to add more fruits and veggies, and less chips and cookies.

This seems like a good place for this one: Pounds per excitement.

              • I like that graph!!

No lunch walk today, but I did do over 30 mins of Active, burning 130 cals. Which was the same amount of cals in my popcorn

                Gonna weigh again tomorrow.....

                • I have really really slacked off on the working out. It's getting more difficult because I keep making excuses why I can put it off for another day. <Sigh> Bad, bad Lupo! Tomorrow I'm going to do batch cooking, since next week will be super hectic and crazy. Start of semester rush in Textbook hell, first week of classes, etc, etc.

I lost my motivation, and don't know how to get it back!! Halp halp!!

BE, are you running or walking on the treadmill? Makes a difference in shoe choice. I have New Balance shoes, and they are fantastic. Great arch and heel support. From what you describe, it might not be good arch support in your current shoes. I had that problem. Outside of the feet ached after extensive walking.

Just a suggestion. Hope it helps. But New Balance is by far my favorite shoe brand. I've tried Nike and others, but keep coming back to NB.

Work out your frustrations by....working out!

I like setting goals, and then rewarding myself. For example.....if I do indeed hit my goal tomorrow...I will reward myself with.....hmm....I'm not sure what

I walk on the treadmill. When I go outside I try to mix in a bit of running, but it's been too hot and humid. Too much activity in that kind of weather just makes me dizzy and gives me a migraine. I do my best to keep hydrated but it doesn't always help. I don't like to run on the treadmill because I always feel like I'm going to fall. - I can't run very long at a stretch and if I'm on solid ground it's much easier to slow down than when the "ground" is moving in the opposite direction. I really hope this weather breaks soon. But since I do a bit of both, that's why I figure I should talk to someone who knows what they're talking about.

I used to always get Nikes but the last few times I've looked for sneakers I didn't have much luck with them. The ones I have now are Avia, which replaced a pair of Adidas that I liked (I still wear them for general running around on the weekend, but not for actual exercise, since they're kind of old). I used to have Rykas, which as far as I know they only make women's shoes. Athletic shoes can be so confusing, and every season they have to change something so finding the same ones twice is nearly impossible.

                      • I've been switching back and forth between Merrill and Ecco for my running shoes, depending on circumstance. Trail w/mud, rocks, and weird little tiny hills? Merrill. Track, road, or path-next-to-road? Ecco. Mostly because of the tread. My Merrills are hardy bits of shoe, some weight, lots of good tread, whereas the Eccos are lighter, more manaeuverable and bouncier, with ok tread, but not great. I've picked both sets up at outlets, so I paid probably half what I would at a department or shoe store, though even then the Merrills were $65 and the Eccos were $50.

It's worth it, though. I'm training for a 10K in October, and having shoes that don't hurt my feet twenty minutes in is a dream.

                          • Weighed in this morning. down 3.6 lbs since my last weigh in 3 weeks ago. Lost another half inch on my hips. This despite not exercising regularly...

Guess all that manual labor at work came in handy for something...But I will get back to exercising. I will I will. Eventually...? <sigh> And Cat, thanks for the motivation, I have to remember to come here more often!

                            • That forty-five minutes last night had ... consequences. Was nearly crippled for the rest of the night - struggled up the stairs and was desperately thinking that there was a shower at the end of the trip. I was knackered enough not to read the pizza label (chum was over and left one in the fridge) - that smegger was decidedly over a thousand calories.

                              Damn.

May not be on it tonight due to letting my legs recover.

                              • If you're losing weight w/o excersing as much, I think it can be a few things:

you're eating healthier....maybe not aware of it..I've notice my eating habits are more routine now....I may stop the cal counting soon!
                                you upped your metabolism
you've buit some muscle, which I've heard burns more calories?

                                Oh, a manual labor=excersing

Raps, my leg sympathizes with yours....I think I *may* be all better today
