  • just one break, that's all I need

Have any of you been at the point where you can see your ship is sinking, know that you can't stop it, and all the lifeboats are gone...
Yeah, that's where I'm at right now.
Giving out much more info than I should right now.
My income is $18k a year (give or take depending on how many shifts I get called into at my oncall job at the hotel).
School is about $9k a year.
Utilities all combined is about $200 a month or $2400 a year (my internet is on contract and can't be cancelled and my electric and gas I'm already doing what I can to keep down).
About $50 a week in petrol (if I'm lucky) or $2600 a year
Food for me and my fiance is $100 a week if we shop smart, or $5200 a year.
As it is that my mother is the landlord she is willing to forgive me rent as long as I am enrolled in school, but I still have to pay the property maintanence fees to the HOA, which is $150 a month (about to go to $175, but I'll stick with $150 for argument). So another $1800 a year.
I will end up having to spend nearly $500 on maintanence on my car at its current level of use and going by manufacture's maintanence schedule.
Now for those of you at home following along with calculators, you will notice I've only covered my major expenses (and consequently the ones I have the least control over reducing) and I am at $21500, or a shortfall of $3500. My mother is willing to provide $200 a month (on top of not charging rent, and once again, only as long as I am going to school), which still leaves me in the hole $1100. I don't qualify for student loans or financial aid, and I know that I can't afford not to complete school. There just aren't enough jobs going around for my fiance, who has no car, no drivers license, and the misfortune of only having experience with the culinary industry which has been one of the hardest hit, to be able to find a job to be able to help out (not that he hasn't tried).
I have only one life boat left, and that is a promotion I applied for at work which has a salary of $26k, but I know I'm competing against people with a lot more seniority than me and my chances of getting it aren't that good. I don't know how many people actually applied, but there are over 200 people who are qualified for it (my best hope is that because it is the least prestigious of the three internal openings that less people are likely to have applied for it). Right now, honestly I don't kow what I'll do if I don't get the position, I desperately need the extra income. I can use whatever prayers, good thoughts, voodoo, or encouragement that any of you can provide. I'm at wits end and don't know who if anyone I can turn to.

If you don't mind me asking, why don't you qualify for student aid or loans? The reason I ask is because I make almost $25,000 a year (that is the max if I get my yearly bonus and use my vacation pay and work 40 hours a week), sometimes it is a little more and sometimes less but never less than $22,000 a year and I qualify for Stafford subsidized and unsubsidized loans. I am a non traditional student and I qualify for the maximun allowed each year. Just curious...you can tell me to bug off if you want. Student loans would really be a load off your shoulders for sure.

Sending you prayers, happy thoughts, and hugs, you need it.
And as for your fiance, I know about the not having a license and only culinary experience, because that is what I currently am dealing with. Has he tried housecleaning? Petsitting? Anything like that for some pocket money until he can make something else work? It might seem dumb, but it's working for me until I get my license. A little extra money never hurt.

Sorry..another question..Is there any way you can go to part time schooling? Just until you can improve finances. I go part time because I would not be able to work full time and go to school full time, I know some people do that and I admire them but I can't do it. Also, is there anyway you could transfer to a cheaper university, take online classes or anything to make tution cheaper? My university charges 258.75 per credit hour for non traditional students. Does your electric company have a program that averages out your electric use and lets you pay just one amount every month? I have heard of those type of programs for electric and gas. (Mine is included in my rent, thankfully, so I don't have to worry about it.) Your fiance has culinary experience, is there anyway that he can work in a fast food type restuarant for the time being or a place like Perkins or Denny's? Those places usually will hire someone with some experience than joe blow off the streets. I hope ;you don't mind my questions and suggestions, hopefully they will help. Zombiequeen mentioned petsitting, this reminded me that my man told me last night that my neighbor started petsitting and rakes in over $300 a week!! Hell I might have to start doing that, especially for that type of cash!

jnd4rusty, the problem is that I'm young enough that I still have to report my mother's income for financial aide and she makes too much (the fact that she has a shitload of medical debt is apparently irrelevant to the number crunchers in the financial aide office), and I already am in the cheapest school in my area. And the way that their rate schedule works, the more credits you take, the less you pay per credit, so cutting down classes really isn't going to help me in the long run. And he has tried at the fast food places and Dennys... he interviewed at a Dennys downtown, they had one position open and 15 people interviewing, Burger King has now put a policy in place that you can only have an active application at one location at a time (to help them from being overwhelmed by applications I assume), McDonalds is the same, Carls Jr, Subway, Arbys and Wendys have all failed to call him back. Even 7-11 has told him that the person they hire today will have applied 6 months ago, that's how many applications they have on file to go through. The only places in Salt Lake actively hiring (without a degree) are the call centers, and anymore you need to type at least 60 words a minute to work at one... he types 25. It is so bad that the SL Trib did an op-ed not long ago criticizing the governor for claiming that there was recovery in this state when the only people the economy had recovered for were those who hadn't really lost anything to begin with.

And yes, student loans would take a large load off now, but an unsubsidized loan would only plug the hole temporarily... as soon as I graduate I have to worry about paying it back with full interest with no guarantee that I'm going to have gotten a better job by the time that it comes due.
So far, every option that I've seen (other than this promotion) is just delaying my problem, not solving it.

Im sorry to say that short of hitting Mega Millions, without a higher paying job, or Fiance able to land a job, a student loan sounds like the last option.

YES you have to pay it back, but payments dont start until 6 months after you graduate and honestly, they are easy to work with. Call them to defer a payment or forbear the loan for a while. Maybe only pay interest if you are tight for a bit. Once you graduate, you'll (hopefully) land that better job with a decent $$ and be able to afford bills. Plus no tuition to pay back at that time.

Also, if you dont live with your mom, why do you have to report her income? Is that a Utah thing? Ive been in school a bit and have never had to report my parents income on my FAFSA. How old are ya if u dont mind me asking?

I never reported my parents' income on my FAFSA, and I started grad school when I was 24 (that was the first time I filled out a FAFSA). They're improving student loan payback options all the time.

Can you see if someone you know could lend him the money for a typing class? One of the classes I'm taking this semester is a professional keyboarding class that should take my typing up to 65wpm.

Nope, not a Utah thing. I have to do it here in PA. It makes no sense, but if you're under 25 and have never been a ward of the state, you have to report one or both of your parents incomes.

Smiley, have you tried calling your internet company and telling them you can no longer afford to pay? They might be willing to work with you, despite the contract.

I'd double-check the requirements for age. I don't seem to recall there being an absolute need for age, just income-- and if you're a dependent (ie get the money you have from a parent). And the whole debt thing with your ma just stinks too.
Best of luck. (also, 100/mo for groceries is amazing for 2 people, but you might have slightly cheaper prices in a larger city than the one I'm in. The one I'm in, people go to Salt Lake or Seattle for huge stuff. ... And it's still the city for hospitals and stuff for the area.)

I know it really sucks when you start adding all the numbers up, and you find out that not only do you barely break even, but that's IF you get as many hours as you should.

Amina, if you were married before the age of 25 you also don't have to report their income.
