There was a girl who was in my Astronomy class in third year. She never went to class. Though few people went regularly. In a class of 90 students there were usually 8 or 12 of us there regularly. Anyway, she never went to class and was horrible during study sessions. So the day of the final i have a few friends over to study, I don't invite her. 10 minutes before the exam I bump into her and ask how studying went. "Oh I didn't study." So I asked her what she got on the final assignment. "Oh, I didn't do any of the assignments." Weeks later we got our grades and she flunked. She was totally dumbfounded. I still find that hilarious! The girl didn't study for her exams, never went to class, didn't hand in a single assignment; yet she was shocked she flunked the course.
As for group projects, I hate them too. But worse than slackers, I hate people who work really hard on their section of the project, but don't participate in the group. I had that happen in my Buddhism course. Our group never met up. In fact, a week before the presentation we had a mandatory group meeting with the TA. It was at this point that everyone revealed they had no idea what they were supposed to do. The TA gave us new parameters for the assignment. The day of the presentation everything came off very polished and professional since everyone had worked so well on their sections, though there was some redundancies. We got to grade our group mates, but only a small section was determined on how we worked as a group. I couldn't lie and say everyone in my group did bad work, because it was all excellent stuff. However, I still think they should have been punished some how for the lack of communication.
